You knew the risks of doing business like this when you get involved in illegal drugs. But where you screwed up was letting some total stranger on the internet dump money into your account and then you buying illegal drugs with his money. Now all bets are off if he decides to rat you out. Unless you pay up of course, and even then theres no guarantee if the cops get to him and he gives you up anyhow (a little far fetched but still possible)

So your friend sent you the letter..ok well that sounds bogus but unless you can fully explain the situation to your friend then little you can do or he can do for that matter. Sucks but if your being honest with him then I don't know what else to say other than maybe pay him half on a payment schedule perhaps if you feel bad.
