THE BOEING 727-100, which was owned by TAME, lost radio contact at 10:23 a.m., the department said in a statement.
The jetliner was heading from Quito to the border city of Tulcan, 85 miles north of the capital. Its last contact was with the control tower at the Tulcan airport.
An Ecuadorean aviation official told NBC the aircraft crashed into the mountains between Tulcan and Pieles. The Ecuadorean authorities said the plane was carrying nine crew members and 83 passengers, including two infants.

RED CROSS TEAMS
NBC’s Laura Saravia reported that 50 rescue workers based near Tulcan were dispatched to the scene.

The crash was the second involving an Ecuadoran plane this month.
A aircraft from Ecuador’s state-owned oil company with 26 people on board crashed in Colombian territory on Jan. 17 while it was heading from Quito to Lago Agrio, an oil outpost in the Amazon jungle 110 miles northeast of Quito.
Six days later, searchers found the wreckage of the twin-engine propeller plane on the side of a hill a few miles across the border. All 21 passengers and five crew members on board died.
Tulcan is 75 miles northwest of Lago Agrio.
