I was awaiting this album for a while, mainly to hear some new sounds from Slash's guitar. I expected it to be a pretty heavy rock album(good gym music), and while it is definitely that, I was somewhat disappointed by the fact that there weren't more of those solos that helped define rock, and that most of the songs on the album sound the same. After reading some of the good reviews, I was hoping to hear something with more innovation or at least a little more creativity, but most of the album sounds like rehashed punk/metal/rock done a thousand and 1 times before(ie screaming vocals over blaring guitar droning.
Where's the catchy licks and riffs that made songs like Paradise City, Interstate Love Song, Welcome to the Jungle, etc. so great? Or the solos that make you think of Sweet Child o Mine and November Rain? Maybe they're just finding their place. There are a few good songs that stick out in my mind, but I know that from the past albums of GnR and STP that the alumni of this group are very capable of more creative material. That being said, the band itself is great, and they have made a worthwhile, and very credible, first album.
I give it a 3 out of 5.
