I have a few good ideas floating around and was wondering if anyone here has had experience with patents?

Depends on the device.
Some advice someone with a lot of experience with this stuff told me:
If it's a relatively low dollar item, hold off on filing, make a billion of them with 'patent pending' printed on them, and then file it. Otherwise you will likely be beat to market and will have to fight in court to see dime one.

get "patent it yourself" book off the web. VERY well written book and explains EVERYTHING you may want to know. STudy it well and you may know just as much as patent lawyers in terms of the procedures, rules, etc. (minus the experience).
Contrary to what people believe -- it is NOT as complex as people think it is. The PTO did this on purpose, so they're not forced to dwell on each patent for HOURS with a complex set of rules and laws.
Most of the time/money spent is really on *presentation* and *documentation*. Which really isn't defined by any rules of law or standards. The book explains this quite well.
Don't worry too much about lawsuits. Even if you *got* a patent -- a Microsoft could still destroy you. It's how Google destroyed anyone who ever used the world google or froogle or googles in the past 50 yeras and still won.

i work for a patent firm, unless you are sure you're idea will sell, it can cost a lot for a single inventor. your best bet is to look into a provisional patent, only will cost $80 (prices changed 10/1, but im lazy) to file it, but you're going to pay more than that for a lawyer for sure!
