Seeking nonsports-related injury advice...

Twisted my damned ankle last night. Was watching a friend's band play at a bar and stepped down off a stool and because someone's bag was there hit the side of my foot with all my momentum going sidewaysand it felt like I ended up with my foot at a 90 degree angle to the floor. lots of popping feeling, like when you pop your ankle when you're loosening up for a run. It didn't exactly hurt, but I knew it would today. I couldn't get off it for another hour or two.

:(

This morning it's only a little swollen, but it hurts to walk on. I *could* make it to work (I have good hiking boots) but I don't really need to, yay! So I'm at home today.

I've taken aspirin, but was wondering what else I should do for this? I don't want it to screw up my quest for physical pefection, lol.

Thanks for any advice.

Icing? Heat? One and then the other? To wrap or not to wrap?

Wyst, shut-in for a day.

Well, I just talked to my accident-pro boss and he was very sympathetic and told me to stay home today -- just a little work to email in -- so *that* certainly helped.

Thanks VDL! xoxoxo

So what should I do for this thing so it doesn't swell up like a balloon? I've never had an ankle twist like this before...

Get a cold pack on it and keep it elevated.
I'm not sure about the latter - that is what our volleyball coach used to have us do.

I sprained my ankle running a few years ago, but now no probs whatsoever. Treat it with the RICE method:

R = Rest, minimal walking ok

I = Ice it for 20 minute periods several times a day.

C = Compression in ace bandage wrap. Do not wrap too tightly where you see pressure marks in your skin, just enough for gentle support.

E = Elevation, keep it elavated on a stool, pillow, etc.

Take some anti-inflammatories, like Motrin. Get well soon!

Exactly what FF said - definitely do it -I sprained my ankle really badly last April, iced it and wrapped it for a few days, but it simply would not heal for several weeks until I got really rigorous about the ice and anti-inflammatories. Iced it every day for several days, popped the AI's, wrapped it nicely and it finally went away.

Def. take some motrin....will help with any swelling. Injuries suck.....hope it gets better Wyst :)

I was going to suggest exactly what FitFossil said...RICE...it helps the healing and swelling process.

Now, being the extremely clumsy person that I am....and having sprained my right ankle 4 times and my left ankle twice...I have some very good advice for you that I suggest you take. :)

If you have a physical therapy band or something of the sort...that you could use...you need to do so and start doing ankle strengthening exercises right NOW. I am telling you....I didn't do that after I first sprained it...hence my continual bad luck with both ankles. Even if you don't have a band...you can use a towel for resistance. Ligaments and tendons never ever fully heal after they are sprained, but the more strengthening exercises you do...the more likely you are NOT to sprain them again!

Good luck with it...and Aleve works wonders for the swelling! :)

Good point Night Fly - something I did once it wasn't too sore to move was to write the alphabet in the air with your toes a couple of times every morning before I got out of bed. Seemed to help - and covers all ROMS.

I havent been on the boards much AT ALL and miss a lot of my buddies!!!!:( whats new wyst!?!?!?:) :)

Hey all, I riced it and then wore my charming hiking boots for a day or two and it's okay now, although the occasional twinge if there's sideways pressure on it.

Thanks for the advice/support.

Hey KBGirl! How you livin'?

I'm good, doing plenty of training, running around like crazy with relative visits, trying to get my s**t in order.

Where you been all this time?

Wyst
