The police seem more concerned about getting a conviction than getting who is actually guilty. Probably the person they convict is the guilty party on most occasions, but they'd go for whomever they can make a case against.
I have sat on a couple of juries. I don't like the way the police operate. You often hear transcripts of them questioning suspects and they ask leading questions trying to get the suspect to admit to a worse crime than they indended or simply to trip themselves up. The questions they ask don't seem to be phrased to get to the truth, but instead they set up a situation and attempt to manipulate a suspect into it.
One trial I was on was for a woman who stabbed her ex-boyfriend. We ultimately let her off because we considered it self defense. But the police questioning her kept trying to twist what she was saying and attempting to get her to admit to premeditated intent. She was a simple (and probably illiterate) immigrant woman who they were trying to take advantage of. Someone like me or most of the people on the jury never would have got into her situation because we were so much more worldly, better educated, etc. The police were exploiting her naivety.
