Online Brokerage Account

I am 20 and am interested in investing $2500-4000 in an online brokerage account and was wanting some feedback from those of you who have done this. What company is best? Do you do market or limit order trades? Any advice would be helpful.

Find a company that gives you a minimum of 5000 shares for a flat rate trade. Never trade on margin or options if you are a beginner. And learn to only place limit orders. (I once lost $20,000 on a single trade by placing it as a market order. The MM's walked it down very fast.)

Don't listen to anyone who recommends a company. Learn to do your own research.

Sell when you reach a profit goal. It is okay to date a stock and not marry it... but the people who practice "Buy and Hold" are usually the ones who make money in the long run.

All day traders are idiots.

Get the book HOW TO MAKE MONEY IN THE STOCK MARKET by O'niel and read it cover to cover before you place an order.

Make sure you dont need that money. The market fluxuates alot and it may drop after you buy it so get whatever you want and hold it for the long run.

look into getting some lucent. Its at its all time lows now. I might drop some more but holding it for the long run could give you 100%++ profits.

any of the major online companies are fine, Ameritrade, Datek, Etrade, etc. Just look for the best prices for trades. SofaGeorge had a lot of advice you should listen to, the only thing I will add is to sit down and think about your objectives carefully, that should help you with the types of investments you will want to make. Good luck.

Vic...just wondering why you think Lucent is going to turn around? I don't follow it closely, but from what I have heard they are "in trouble". Have you seen some info that looks positive on them? ...just curious

Thanks guys.

SOfa George: Bill O'Neil is great. I read IBD all the time. Do you have any current favorites?
Any to hold for the long term(20+ years)

Yes... but only because I am an insider under non-disclosure with several companies... so I can't share the advice.

did you get my pm??

Barnige... I strongly warn you to ignore any "tips" or advice on stocks. If you want to do a phone conversation I will happily detail for you how much money I have lost on "hot tips" "sure things" and inside information.

Learn to do your own research... only.

Oh, and never bet against the shorts. You will lose.

im not trying to persuade barnige to do anything, i needed some off topic feed back thats all big brother:D

I use Etrade. What an online brokerage allows is for you to take advantage of fluctuations in real-time. You can make (or lose) in a hurry. Just be careful and make sound decisions based on the research that is available on these sites.

Oh, last major and most important bit of advice... under no circumstances start reading stock message boards on the internet... particularly for stocks you own.

Mr Bill.

Nothing more than that they are doing some serious restructuring. They barely made it through this time but they're still around. They cut costs, and got rid of everything that wasn't making them the profit they needed. If they hang in a little while longer until the economy turns and demand for telecom stuff goes up their price will rebound. I doubt you'll see lucent at $70/share, but there's a good chance that they will get to $15.00 a share. Just be willing to hold on for a while cause it may not go anywhere anytime soon.

They aren't in any serious trouble, they took some hits because they announced that they wouldn't be performing as well as they thought. Of course a lot of this over reaction is because people are now fearful of what happened with enron-people are just afraid to loose their money. Then there was an announcement that telecom wasn't in full demand. Of course the economy has to rebound first and new businesses will need to be created before lucent will be in demand again. We'll see...This is a stock you get and just hold..Fuck the day trading bullshit, your going to cause yourself more stress than its worth.

I use ameritrade. $15 for limit orders. unlimited real-time quotes

Start out investing in well-known companies --stay away from unestablished, less stable companies.

I started a little over a year ago and learned to stay away from penney stocks.

And watch the market as a whole. When the market is dropping like a rock, even the most profitable companies will have troubles gaining.

Check out Ford Motor company---they are in recovery--read up on 'em.

Check out the cruise line--ie carnival, royal carribean etc.

stay away from Lucent.
