I gotta disagree here. Most men DID NOT fight in Vietnam. Most did not serve at all. Bush chose to serve. He elected to follow in his pop's footsteps and fly fighter jets.

He could have avoided service altogether if had wanted to.

The public tide against Vietnam really started turning around the late 60's. Not exactly sure of Kerry's service dates.

I think he mostly stayed in sync with public opinion.
