Oliver Stone will direct 9/11 film staring Nicolas Cage

NEW YORK (AP) - Nearly four years after the collapse of the World Trade Center, Oscar-winning director Oliver Stone will direct a film based on the story of two police officers who were trapped in the rubble on Sept. 11, 2001.

Nicolas Cage, who won a best-actor Oscar for "Leaving Las Vegas," will star as Port Authority police Sgt. John McLoughlin. McLoughlin and fellow officer William J. Jimeno became trapped during rescue efforts after the collapse of the twin towers.

Paramount Pictures said the movie is expected to be released next year.

"It's a work of collective passion, a serious meditation on what happened and carries within a compassion that heals," Stone said in a statement Friday. "It's an exploration of heroism in our country - but it's international at the same time in its humanity."

Paramount said the film also will focus on the officers' rescuers and their families. McLoughlin and Jimeno are said to be the last two men rescued.

"I feel someone had to tell the story of the people who were in the Trade Center before and after it collapsed," McLoughlin said in a statement. "It needs to be told how this horrific tragedy brought Americans and the world together to help those in need."

While the star power of Stone and Cage will likely make the movie the most high profile film to tackle 9/11, it's not the first. Many independent films have turned their lens to downtown New York, and in the 2002 film "The Guys," Anthony LaPaglia played a fire captain who lost eight men in the towers' collapse.

Stone has won best-director Oscars for "Platoon" and "Born on the Fourth of July." He also has directed "Alexander,""Nixon,""JFK" and "Wall Street."

Screen credits for Cage include "Adaptation,""City of Angels" and "Moonstruck."

What's it going to be called? Ladder 49 2?

Knowing Oliver Stone's work it should be a little more "powerful" than that, especially considering the subject matter.

Hmm...I can't help but be a bit skeptical. As Oliver Stone has not directed a good movie in over 10 years. But then, who knows. Maybe he'll redeem himself.

His career speaks for itself and of course this is a very emotional subject.

I expect it to be an oustanding film.

Career? You mean Platoon and JFK?

The rest of his films are mediocre at best.

I expect him to do a thorough thrashing of America using yet another American tragedy as his vehicle. Check out his track record regarding historical US films:
Platoon: slam on US government policy (albeit probably justified)
Wall Street: slam on US Capitalism
Natural Born Killers: slam on US culture.
JFK: slam on US government by JFK conspiracy.
Born on the 4th of July: another anti-US vietnam era slam, just for good measure.

His upcoming 9/11 film will undoubtedly go all out in slamming Bush and the US government with the ultimate conspiracy theory.

I dont want to see it
the live version was sad enough

In now way do I mean for this to sound wrong and fucked up but... you know what happens in the end. Unless their is some underlying storyline then I don't think it will do well. You never know though, Titanic and Passion of the Christ did really really well so we will see.

I hope Oliver Stone can quit doing blow for a few months so he won't fuck up every movie he's done recently. Plus Nic Cage is either dead on or terrible.

Its too soon to make a movie about 9/11. Imagine if there was a film made about Pearl harbor a mere 5 years after it happened? 9/11 is too fresh on peoples minds at this point, there needs to be sufficient time for that event to fade from the public's consciousness or else there will be a backlash against it.

In the article it mentions that there have already been small independant films made about 9/11. Of course, nothing to this magnitude.

small independant films will always have their niche audience. If a big budget A-List movie was made and drew only the niche audience from the indy films, it would be a financial disaster for the studio. I hope they are taking this into consideration before rushing into one of the most sensitive subjects in this nations history.
