New Drug Test for Marijuana

by Paul Cribb, B.H.Sci HMS
AST Director of Research

A lot of people compete in sports or work in fields that must submit to drug testing, and a lot of people smoke marijuana regularly or occasionally. If you do enjoy the odd puff of Al Capone but may have to submit to a drug test, then be careful.

Researchers from the National Institute of Drug Abuse have devised a new test that measures a recently isolated metabolite of THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol), the psychoactive ingredient in pot. Testing for this metabolite beats most of the masking agents some people may use to pass drug tests. Also, this metabolite stays in the system longer and can be detected more effectively than previous methods. So if you take a toke, be careful your business or sporting career doesn’t go up in smoke.
