Oh, Help, P.C. Hardware Question ...

musclemom

I Told You So ...
EF VIP
My son has a birthday coming up and I'm totally dropping the ball over here ... :worried:

He is a SERIOUS, SERIOUS, SERIOUS, HARCORE GAMER (I really cannot emphasize this enough ... the boy admits he has a problem ... put it this way, he actually has video game playing callouses). ANYWAY ... he'd like a new PCI graphics card for his PC ... and I am so utterly out of the loop on this stuff anymore I have zero clue what's good, bad, or mediocre

Any recommendations?

TIA :qt:

a better present would be to take a fucking sledgehammer to his puter and make him go play some sports outside
any kid that has callouses on his hands from anything but jerking off needs to get his ass outside
shit i was never inside when i was a kid

Your son needs the ATI Radeon X800 XL DVD Edition 256 MB PCIE.

He wont complain :)

outdated

either

ati x1800xt or xl

or the NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GTX

Prepare to pay close to $400-500 for any of the 2 cards, though.

another thing to keep in mind is that some games are VERY dependant on CPU performance or RAM availability, so supping up the Video card alone could not (and in most cases this will happen) create the boost you might expect.

Depending on his current PC setup and the current video card he has, something more conservative, like a Geforce 6600GT or something like that could add some additional punch/features, while saving you lots of $$$

... why do you assume my son is a little child? Not like it's any of your business, but it just so happens he's about to turn 21 and in the service. In his free time he also does Brazillian street fighting. Part of his commitment to the government requires he be physically capable of completing all physical requirements regularly (I don't remember the pushups or situps, but I know he runs a mile and half in under 11 minutes; last time he was at my house he was doing pullups, one-handed -- first time he ever tried them -- did three with no practice). He is required to live on base, which is a mid atlantic state, doesn't have a car, and works swings ... you tell me, what is there to do between 12:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. (the base gym doesn't open until 6:00) except drink, watch t.v., and play video games?

I'm not about to go take a sledgehammer to a computer that my son bought with his own hard earned money.

What he said, although the GeForce 6800 will also run any game out there and save you a lot of cash.

If he was a serious X 3 Gamer, he would NOT let self described "clueless about tech" mom get him the video card. He's tell you the model number, specs, price... or at least gie you a list of possiblities. That stuff can't be messed with.

That's like asking Perkele to pick a date for AAP.

Ummm, I didn't actually say I was "clueless about tech," I said I was "out of the loop." I haven't messed around with any of this crap in over five years, it's stopped being amusing and just turned into a PITA. Which is why I figured I'd ask around; I trust people's personal experiences.

He did name a specific card, but a lower end one. I wanted to get him something a little nicer :)

Then he'll be pleasantly surprised. That's a good thing you're doing for little Johnny. I know that's not his name! damnit!

She said PCI didn't she? Didn't know any of the current NVidia or ATi cards were anything other than AGP. Think the latest PCI card she'll find is like a GEForce 3

WTF, over 60!?! :lmao: I guess if most of the people you know who wait to have kids until they're over 35 it works ... so how the hell are you supposed to know that I got married a month before turning 19, and my son was born 10 months later? I'm a long way from 60, Hammy :qt:

Do you always go through life making so many assumptions?
