Oatmeal RAW or COOKED?

Ok, I'm debating a topic with a fellow EF bro- SynpaxDC:

100g of Oatmeal (quaker 1-min quick oats) raw along with approx 30g flax seed mixed in. Consumes it by chewing and washing it down with water.

My question is: is this effective as far as the absorption processes in the stomach/intestines as compared to a cooked oatmeal?

I also find that oatbran does in fact put less bloat onto me than oatmeal. That's another matter.

quick cooking oat are higher GI than old fashioned slow cooking. all that you are doing by not cooking them is saving about 2 points on the GI chart. not worth the horrible taste if you ask me

But cooking takes time. And takes longer to eat cooked.

I don't not cook it for GI, I do it for convenience. And it tastes pretty good.

Synpax.. it takes exaclty 2 minutes and 30 seconds in the microwave to cook real oats.. the minute brand is even faster (hence the "minute" brand)

1 cup of oats + 1.5 cups water. mix.
Nuke it for 2:30 min.
Eat.

I don't like the way they taste cooked. And they go down easier uncooked with water on the side.

I can down 100g easily uncooked. Cooked that would be twice as much mass and I just could not consume it. It would also require a spoon.

Try it my way; if it doesn't work, no sweat. It works great for me.

But how much can you get into the shake? You blend yuor shake, don't you?

Sitting at my desk at work, 100g go down in 30 minutes. I can't imagine getting all that oatizzle in your shakahnizzledizzle.

i've blended anywhere from 1/4c to 1c of oatmeal into a shake. never had any real problems, other than not letting it blend long enough. i usually make it ahead of time, and bring it to class or work.

I eat mine raw too. Saves me 10 minutes of cooking and I just swallow bout 5 spoonsful with my protein shake. Done with breakfast in 2 minutes. :D

i put a half cup in with my 2nd meal of the day which is a huuuge shake.

just make sure you let it blend for a while so that the oats arent all chunky.

btw, when you say "quick" oats - the oats that I eat come in two versions, regular and "quick". The quick oats are exactly the same thing except they are pre ground up so they cook faster.

How would that changed the GI? It wouldn't.

Hell Yeah Jojo!

We need to make a club with t-shirts. What should we call it?

I will be the major general of the club and you can be brigadier admiral.

I eat uncooked steel cut oats, but I let them soak in water overnight to soften them up. I only eat 1/4 cup at a time though.

oatmeal...

i went out and bought oatmeal to eat for breakfast bcause thats what all of you urged. i bought the quaker oats strawberries and cream kind. this tastes fine to me but im under the impression that you all eat plain oatmeal with no flavor to it. did i buy the wrong stuff and if so, what makes it worse? i was eating cereal and poptarts so also is what i have a step up from that or no? thanks for the help

Sounds like the kind you bought has a lot of extra junk in it that makes it more expensive.

What yo are looking for is a cardboard canister approximatly 2 lbs and 10oz in weight with a picture of a quaker on the front. There should be two kind - normal and 'quick' oats. Get the quick because they are cut up smaller and otherwise no different. To save money, maybe buy the generic kind.

Pour it into a plastic cup that you can bend, about 100g worth and pour a large glass of water. Sit down in chair at a table. Pour the oats into your mouth from the cup - not too much at first. Chew the oats a little. Then fill your mouth with water from the glass, swish a little, and swallow.

It ain't hard. Just try it. If you don't like it, you don't like it.

actually, quick are processed and have a higher GI..........go with steel cut oats, by far the best out there.......

Really? WEll I'll be. I couldn't see any difference on the container. How much higher GI is it?
