Oatmeal question

course (steel-cut) are less processed than rolled oats (which are steamed and literally pressed or rolled by a big ass machine to make them flat and make them cook more quickly).

coarse oats have a truer, nuttier flavor and they confer more nutritional benefits in the form of nutrients since they haven't been processed as highly as rolled oats.

as far as GI goes, i couldn't tell you, but if i had to guess, the coarse oats would be lower on the scale for the simple reason that they are less processed.

hope this helps.

never heard of coarse oats before.... but...

rolled oats are better (lower GI) than "quick" oats... which are basically mashed up rolled oats.

so course *Is* Steel cut?

I have steel cut in a tin by mCanns which is toughter than the course stuff mby Mornflakes in a bag but the only store selling steel cut in my area stopped selling it :(

Oh wait....you don't mean the kind that comes in packets and is loaded with sugar do you? That kind isn't the best choice - but I know Quaker makes plain old instant oats (no sugar added).

no i mean the plain stuff that comes in a big barrel with no sugar. Too bad the sugary crap isnt good for you, that stuff tastes great! :D

hansel - that's what i buy.

audiophyle - those instant oats are healthy, but you're giving up so much by not using rolled or even steel-cuts. like rice, the more it is processed, the more nutrients it's going to lose.
