Hey:
New-poster, here. I am sure that most, if not all, of you, have heard the theory of a certain gene being-manipulated, that would give all of us humans, "eternal-life", here on this unhappy-planet. Bad-idea, if you ask me. That is going too-far. We are already overcrowded, as it is. That sure would not help. If this ever did come about, though, murder would be a lot more-serious crime, than it already is though, would it not? Lemme-know how all of you stand on this, okay? Can't wait to hear from ya!

One gene being manipulated would never guarantee eternal life (even if you exclude accidental death).

I'd rather life a decent 70 year life than 500 years of meaningless existence. Also if I was a wheelchair-bound, machine-dependant to survive, person for all the years from when I reached 70 until I died aged say 500, I'd rather die at 70.

Just my 2 cents. :)

Crime and Punishment

Killing someone is always serious business. I don't see why extended lifespan would make it more serious. Killing an old man is still murder.

If you think about it, life in prison would be more serious.
There are fates worse than death, but does anyone deserve them for just bringing death sooner rather than later?

I think the death penalty would pretty much work with 500 year lifespans as well as 75.

I would like to see life extended for a much longer time! not because i am afraid of death, but simply because 75 years is not enough time to do all the things i would like to do. I would like to maybe be a doctor, a lawyer, and who knows what else! But with so little time, it is usually an either or, not ALL! also maybe i would like to live in 20 different countries in my lifetime and spend enough quality time there to appreciate the culture and adjust! try that in 75 years! of course if life is extended, i am sure that would mean quality of life would be impproved as well and if not right away then by the time you got to be 100 i am sure that science at that time could almost guarantee it would be..... but then again none of this will be happining in our lifetimes, so make the most out of what you have!

Eternal Wife

This is one hot topic. It's a part of my understanding that the only thing to be concerned about is a life without purpose. Discover the purpose and all that matters is if you have enough time to fulfill it. I feel life is kind and that if you don't discover your purpose by a certain time, it throws every numbing agent and distraction your way so you don't have to suffer the fact you'll die a meaningless existence.

That being said...we don't even know how to responsibly live a 70 year life, that it's just imagination to think 100s more years is what we need to figure it out. Think of all the things that would be affected:

Would you really want the same wife for 500 years? No way!
Would you be able to stick to chicken, tuna and eggs for 500 years? No way!
Would you be able to relate to 20 year olds when you were 300 or 400? No way!
What kind of activities would really hold the interest of a 400 year old? Virtual Shuffleboard? No Way!
Would you be able to resist all temptation to commit some of the more lurid crimes for 100s of years? No Way!

How would life insurance agents continue to feed their families?
How would prisons be able to contain all the people with life sentences?

The list just goes on and on and on.

Believe me...or don't, but the moment man finds a way to tamper with anything as significant as that, a disease or a war will take care of that. Things will always remain in balance...the more violent the change, the more violent the reaction. Something holds everthing in place...think about it. We learned how to split the atom and first a load of people were fried to a crisp by it, and then it became an energy source whose waste is polluting oceans and every place its stored.

Besides, any of the wise men will tell you that Eternity is not of Time. It extends into Time but it does not originate here. And man, using his time-mind (he has more than one mind), reduces Eternity to mean: a long time. When, in fact, it's appearance in time is best referred to as, "Now."

There. That ought settle the issue.....not!
