I was just reading about Nolvadex... what I once believed to be a harmless drug used to prevent gyno? I was researching some sides... and found this:
Serious and life-threatening events associated with NOLVADEX include uterine malignancies, stroke, pulmonary embolism, and Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). Uterine malignancy (including endometrial adenocarcinoma and uterine sarcoma), stroke, pulmonary embolism, and DVT occurred 2 to 4 times more frequently with NOLVADEX than placebo, but these events occurred in less than 1% of women. Some of the strokes, pulmonary emboli, and uterine malignancies were fatal.
Health care providers should discuss the potential benefits versus the potential risks of these serious events with women at high risk of breast cancer and women with DCIS considering NOLVADEX to reduce their risk of developing breast cancer. For most women with invasive breast cancer, the benefits of NOLVADEX outweigh its risks. (See Full Prescribing Information including boxed Warning)
Women who are pregnant or plan to become pregnant should not take NOLVADEX. When used to reduce the incidence of breast cancer in high-risk women or in women with DCIS, NOLVADEX is contraindicated in women who require anticoagulant therapy or have a history of deep-vein thrombosis or pulmonary emboli. Cataracts and cataract surgery also occurred more frequently in clinical trials with NOLVADEX than placebo. The most frequently reported adverse reactions with NOLVADEX were hot flashes and vaginal discharge.
