Newspaper Article--Interest to All

In today's Sun-Sentinel, there is an article written by Gina Kolata, The New York Times, entitled "Hormone Therapy for Males Unproven."

It mentions that the federal government halted a major study involving female hormone replacement therapy. Now, the gov't is halting a major study of Hormone Replacement in older men. Mentions some stats: 1.5 million prescriptions for Testosterone written in 2001, up from 806,000 written in 1997. The article states that the benefits of Testosterone have never been demonstrated in a large clinical trial.

Risks that are contributing to the stoppage of the major trial: "...testosterone CAN fuel the growth of prostate cancer, and it increases red blood cell production, POSSIBLY increasing the risk of clots that can cause heart attacks and strokes." Of course, money for the research is used as an excuse. So, a six year gov't study has been scuttled because of these reasons.

So, this is why our country never makes any significant progress in the area of preventative medicine. Just my thoughts today.

Stuff like this just makes me so angry. They dont even take into account that the majority of health problems stem form crappy diets and once again instead of addressing the "problem" they only look at symptoms and try and avoid things that may exacerbate the situation instead of dealing with the original cause of the problem.
