Newbie question about surgery...

This is my 1st post-I usually just read others to get the info I want. But, I am needing some more personal advice now.

I have been on my program for about 6 months now, I am so close to my goals and now I have to have some procedure called laproscopy. (they put a camera & some gas inside you and explore your organs) I have some serious gynecological problems. So, if they find a tumor, or anything of that nature that needs to be remove they will do it at that same time. Has anyone had this procedure done, and did it affect your training for too long? I am really upset about this, and I am worried that I will have to start all over. Not to mention the fear of cancer. I also feel like all of this stress is having an impact on my workouts. Seems like I can't really get into it anymore. I am actually thinking of just not doing it...

I know a girl that had it done and she said it was no big deal...but she is no where near in shape.

Well the first thing is that if you have known health issues, you absolutely need to deal w/ them. That's a given. Stuff that you ignore often doesn't go away and will impact your progress in fitness when IT choooses to as opposed to when YOU choose to deal w/ it. The fact that you are in shape & eating clean will help you recover from anything much faster than if you aren't. Your body doesn't have additional shit in it that would add to the already stressful process of recovery.

I have no idea the type of surgery you have on tap - but that is by far priority over your current progress. Everyone encounters setbacks in life. Its not like this is the "only progress" you will ever make. In 1991 I went in for foot surgery that left me in walking casts for 4 months. I knew I'd be down for that long so I trained alot prior so I'd be able to have a solid place to pick up from when I was able. I watched my diet while I was stuck sitting and didn't let myself start eating because i was depressed. The affect on your ability to get back into training will depend on 1) the extent of surgery, if needed 2) your health & ability to recover 3) your patience in allowing the appropriate recovery time 4) your doctor's recommendation.

It also doesn't help you at all to add "omg I'm going to lose my progress" to the pile of stress you are sitting in. Its just part of life. Everyone encounters issues. Just pay attention to the things you do have control over and minimize the additoinal stress, eating, etc that you may just let yourself fall into because you are letting it all control you.

I would not recommend not having this surgery done....Especially when it comes to GYN problems..... I had dysplasia at one time (pre cancerous cells in my cervix) and had to have several small "surgeries" to take care of it....the alternative is much much worse......GYN-type cancer is easily taken care of when caught in time...

Now you may be uncomfortable for a time due to the gas used but it will dissipate on it's own....

I know the anxiety you are going thru....I've gone from being a skiier-every-day as Figure Competitor to an invalid since I tore my ACL....you need support - come here & post up!! There's always someone here to relate to...

Good luck!!

Thanks a bunch. I have never done anything like this...I have had 2 boys but I did it all natural. The idea of being under anesthesia freaks me out, or not being in total control of my body ya know? My husband recently had back surgery and afterwards he was told No more heavy lifting. His heart is broken. I am pretty sure that won't happen with me, I am the picture of health other than these stupid girl parts. Maybe it will benifit me if they have to take them all... can't have anymore babies anyway.

On a better note let me give you my stats so you get a picture of who you are dealing with!

I do eat clean, I haven't actually ever written it all down (guess I should) but I mostly eat grilled chicken, tuna, and lean cuts of beef. Sometimes at work I have to drink a protein shake, because I don't have time to make meals and I have to have a huge protein intake to see any results as I am naturally tiny. I also eat a lot of spinich salad, squash and zuccini. I like boiled eggs for snacks... of course without the yolk. I have the occasional red skinned potato. I never get in the full 6 meals...usually just 5. I try though.

I workout 6 days a week, 20 min of cardio everyother morning (3 days) and weights 3 days a week. I also do a toning class once a week on a cardio day, that is sort of like areobics, but with weights. I do not take any supps. Not sure what would be good for me, I tried T-Rex had NO appetite, and it gave me the shakes. But I don't really need to loose weight, my goal is to thicken up. I know I am short, but I would love to do a competition sometime in the future. A few girls at my gym do them, and I am hoping that with some hard work I will get to that stage. My sweet husband thinks I am ready now, but I know that I am obviosely not ready to travel that road just yet. One day though!

I am sure I left something out...

When is your surgery?? Think of the recovery as a "phase" of your training and once recovery/rehab is over - then start the next phase.....

And Welcome to EF!!
