newbie diet question about carbs

wannabeBB

New member
Ok I admit it- I don't know alot about the type of diets people on here do. But that's why I am here- to learn.
I have been following the Bill phillips diet part of BFL. 5-6 meals a day, a protein and a carb. I am going to start counting calories soon (when I figure out how many I need).
Here's the question-
I know that carbs should be complex carbs. In the Body for Life book Bill talks about mixing cottage cheese with fat free yogurt as a meal. (which is yummy). I have been eating this before I go to bed at night. Last night, I looked on the yogurt container and it had 23 carbs. 13 of those were sugar. Now does this mean I am eating mostly sugar? I think this may not be a good thing but not sure. I am trying to drop some body fat and I want to get this diet part right.

Sugar in yogurt comes from lactose (milk sugar) and added sugars like sucrose, dextrose and fructose. All of the above are simple sugars. The term "sugar" on the nutritional label includes milk sugar and added sugars.

Here's an article about yogurt and a chart evaluated different types based on nutritional and sugar content. http://www.cspinet.org/nah/yogurt.htm
