Podiatrist Says Special Shoes Take Away Cellulite
Shoes Cost Around $230
UPDATED: 2:05 pm PST March 11, 2005
How would you like a pair of shoes that may leave your legs looking and feeling a little more toned at the end of the day?
A European company called Swiss Masai has a unique shoe that may get you moving more often. The shoe is called Masai Barefoot Technology, or MBT. It claims to be the world's smallest gym, reported WCAU-TV in Philadelphia.
"Walking one mile in our MBT is like walking three miles in any other shoe. What you find is it firms up legs, butt and abs," said Linda Gay, of Foot Solutions.
Dr. Tracey Vlahovic, a podiatrist at Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine, agrees. But she also said the shoe has an added benefit -- it reduced her cellulite.
"I have noticed a decrease in cellulite, and my legs are toner. I feel much better walking," Vlahovic said.
The MBT shoe emulates the gait of the Masai tribe of East Africa, who have little to no joint or back problems.
The shoe has a wedge-shaped sole, which forces the foot to hit the ground under the arch, instead of heel first.
"It's much like if you're walking on sand," said Dr. Ken Whitney, a podiatrist. "It makes you stand more vertical, so it's less stressful to your back, knees."
They aren't the prettiest shoes, but you may want to consider function over fashion. The makers of the shoes said they increase muscle activity, even if you're just standing around.
Kevin Lawrence does plenty of standing as a massage therapist in Princeton, N.J. He has worn his MBT shoes for nearly four months, and he said they help him stand on solid ground.
"They're balanced. I feel no pain after the end of a 15-hour day," Lawrence said.
The shoes are not cheap. There are several different styles, and each pair will cost about $230.
For information on the MBT shoes and where to buy them, visit the company's Web site at www.swissmasaius.com.
