It looks like the envelope with a dot designates threads you've posted to, and whether or not there's a new post in it.

It definitely has to do with where you post, but I'm too lazy right now to figure out what the difference between the gray closed envelopes and the gray closed envelopes with the three exclamation lines coming out of the top are.
