Neuromuscular efficiency....which is "more" impressive....

OK....neither one is impressive but they both get your attention for different reasons.

First guy weighs 140 soaking wet and has 13" arms. He sits down and cranks out bench sets of 175 with pretty good form.

Second guy weighs 240 at 5' 8" and has 19" arms. He sits down and cranks out 250 with decent form.

The skinny dude showed me a lot more.

But who impresses the Elite crowd more? Second guy boasts of 240 pounds and 19" arms. Neither one will admit to their bench in a "world of 350 pound plus" benchers.

I'd like to see someone develop and implement a good neuromuscular efficiency rating system that accounts for the fact that a guy that is 5'6" has an enormous advantage on bench and squats. Anyone else feel that way?

Ok. Guy #1 & #2 are both similar in that they both benched a similar amount of weight in proportion to their bodyweight. Guy #1 benched 125% of his body weight. Guy #2 benched 104% of his body weight. So guy #1 has the slight advantage, as he is benching a slightly higher percentage in relation to his weight, but not by much.

However, I do NOT agree that someone who is 5'6" has an "enormous advantage on bench or squats", reason being:

A shorter person has NO advantage on Squats. A 5'6" person who goes to parallel is still going the same distance relative to his height that a 7'2" person has to go to in relation to his. Parallel is parallel. The 7'2" person has to travel a further distance total, but in relation to his height, it is the exact same.

Bench Press is a different matter. However, on the bench, what matters is chest mass & arm length. A person who has a thick chest & short arms has less of a distance to move the bar to lock out than someone with long arms.

Depends on your goals.

My goal is to get bigger (not huge tho), not necessarily lift more.

Progress towards my goal is measured in inches, not pounds. If I keep growing, but stay with the same lifts I'd be happy (but maybe a little disappointed).

Therefore, in your scenario, I would say to myself "Nice work lil' guy, now if only I coul look like that bigger guy."

meh i probably wouldnt notice what the little guy was benching. anything less than 200 i dismiss pretty much as newbie weight. Not saying i dont give them credit, but i rarely pay attention to what their benching if its anything less than 2 plates really. I dont think i would have noticed the little guy

but generally speaking im more impressed with a proportionally larger bench press than an overall larger one.
especially at really low weights

because benching 300 at 150 to me is more impressive than a guy benching 380 at 190

This dude impresses me more, by far.

My little bro lifted for a couple of years in high school when I was doing it. He was benching a clean 260 when he was 17, at 5' 9", 165. He'd push 225 for 8 reps in perfect form. Curled 120 on a straight bar.

That was some impressive shit. He doesn't even work out now and he'll still rep with 200 on bench and 100 on bb curls if he picks it up and throws it around, and he's about 155 and still 5' 9".

Damn....are you sure you have the same parents? You outweigh the little feller by 120 pounds.

The guy who is 5'8" at 240 pounds with 19" arms is packing a lot of fat if 250 is his max set.

I knew a guy who was 5'5", he benched 550 while weighing about 200 or so. He had to move the bar about 6" with a wide grip according to him. Strong as hell? Of course but if he was 6' that bench would be about 400 in my opinion.

No, b/c height has nothing to do with it. ARM LENGTH does. If the 6' guy had longer arms (probable) he would have to make the bar travel a further distance than someone with shorter arms. But if the 5'5" guy & the 6' guys arms were the same length, it wouldnt matter. Do you get it now?

Are you trying to tell me that a 5'6" guy has any real probability of having the same lenght of arm as a 6' guy? Of course it is the arm lenght dummy. Do you get it now?
