Networking GURUS! HELP!!!!

god fucking dammit, i need help, because i am ready to throw 2 different computers out the fucking window.

all i want to do is copy files from one system (XP) to another system (vista) via a crossover cable.

this computer has USB 1.1, so it is just too slow to transfer files over.

what should i be doing.

Share the drive...

go to the xp computer, open 'My Computer' right click the drive... share it out..

On the other computer browse to \\IP ADDY of FIRST COMP\C$ or whatever the share is..

is there a way to send the files over my wireless network from one computer to another.

using this crossover cable is just too fucking retarded.

use your wireless connection

both comps have to be connected to the same wireless router and it helps if they are on the same workgroup. Start > right click My Computer > Properties > Computer Name tab > "to rename this computer or join a domain click Change" > name the workgroup whatever you want but they must be the same on both comps

share the folder you want and view them via 'My Network Places'

ok, this is fucking stupid.

i have transferred shit over a home network before, but now that i have vista, it is like pulling fucking teeth.

i will just deal with USB 1.1 speeds...this isn't worth the aggravation.

It may be that the default firewall settings aren't allowing file sharing. disable the vista/exp firewalls and see if it works any better.

good point

once you have the settings setup it is quite easy and conveniant as long as you have all your media organized into files.
i have my files organized into a Music folder, Video folder, document folder and a school folder

Vista is something else, should be able to follow my directions I gave above

you will have to restart your comp after you rename your workgroup

i think the problem is on my xp box. each and every time, i get the dreaded 'limited or no connectivity' error message when i try to connect my cable.

nothing should be this fucking annoying.

with what cable?!

Are you sure you have a crossover cable? Are both NIC's lit up? This is where having a 1GB USB memory stick comes in handy.

It's prolly because when you directly connect them there is no source for a DHCP IP address.. you need to config each comp with it's own in the same subnet for this purpose since you are direct connecting them..

Make sure to put them back to DHCP..

fuck computer illiterates are annoying..

i have a 2 gig memory stick and an external hard drive, but this thing is USB 1.1...so it is slow as shit, especially when you have to transfer gigs of shit.

ok, i am far from illiterate when it comes to computers. however, i don't do networking shit on a daily basis.

give me a step by step to set this up, and i will be forever in your debt.

I'm on a 6 yr old box. It's still very fast so I put in a USB2 pci card.

I have never heard of using a crossover Cat-5 cable directly between comps to transfer files. The send and receive wire pairs are crossed, so in theory it should work. I think I tried it once but didnt get it to work, but didnt work on it too much since I have a 60GB external harddrive and USB 2.0. jH1's addressing idea should work - just make up some ip address and subnet address but make sure they are usable addresses.

p0ink - you have that external harddrive made yet? if not, it might be worth the headache you are having to wait.

OR
----

pull the hard drive out of your xp machine and plug it into your vista machine while vista is running or make sure you boot from the vista disk. you should be abel to browse the other drive and copy files over which is the fastest method yet if you have SATA drives.

i dont want to drop $50-$70 on a usb 2.0 card. a $10 cable is much nicer.
You can get them on newegg for < $20.

Norton Ghost
PC Anywhere
MS BOB

i have no idea what I am talking about just want my name on this thread

Bro... Crossover cables are legit, if you get a link light it is working. But windows will tell you the connectivity is FUGGED if you don't assign an IP addy since there isn't any DHCP going on.

Why are you using a crossover though if both these computers are already n a network - wired or wireless?

If they both are... just start, run - CMD

type IPCONFIG at the cmd prompt and the IP addy will show up.

then start, run \\IPADDY\C$ or share of the drive on the other computer...

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

each computer is on the same wireless network.

computer 1 (xp) is the old system, and my laptop (vista) is the new system.

both computers have their own, different ip addresses listed in 'ipconfig /all' and on the list of connected people on the wireless router.

i tried your \\IPADDY\C$ and all i get is "No network provider accepted the given network path"

omg

follow my directions on the first page

set one computer to be IP 192.168.2.1 and the other IP to be 192.168.2.2

make sure comps are in same work group, share files, and voila!
