Some of the manufacturers do offer drive testing tools. Do a Google for something along the lines of 'drive fitness' or browse the site of the drive manufacturer.
SMART Tools.... let me see if I can find it. THE SMART stuff is onboard diagnostics for newer hard drives. There free stuff for Linux, not sure on windows.
smartmontools is a command line utitilty that you can use in windows, but you'll need to install cygwin. Prolly not something you are going to want to do... look for windows shit with this link:
