Need help getting instructions for a high tech meter???

I bought a used Minolta CL-100 light meter off of Ebay. No manual was supplied.

Thought I could figure things out but all I can get is this message:
CAP
Yxy

It is pretty high tech. Mostly used for measuring the color temperature of light.

Minolta has disrupted their download link for what was a $1400 meter (or so). I question the ethics of this move myself. Thye also ignore all emails for help and noyone answers the listed phone number.

My initial web searches yielded nothing of value but I am not an internet guru.

You found that page a lot faster than I did. I kept finding a Minolta link that did not work. I'm just not good with computer related things for some reason.

Not a bad deal then. $ 500 was the upper limit of used on that one. That is a pretty decent meter. I have a minolta meter in one of my bags. I forget which, I guess I should break out the camera equipment sometime, too many things in Colorado worth a picture.

Photo meters measure the intensity of light. This meter measures the color of light.

Your better cameras have built in light meters though there are many arguments for manual operations.

Isn't color of light temp dependant? I know Nikon broke some ground with the 3-d matrix metering awhile back. I have been out of the game for a while though.
I was always a film guy on manual. Lots to learn again with digi.

Nikons metering on the F5 was the best that I have ever used. I keep that camera for that reason....plus it goes up to 7 or 8 frames/second.

The digital learning curve involves more than you might imagine. It opens the pandoras box to Adobe Photoshop.

Many people have opened that box and disappeared.............................

Color has three dimensions: hue, chroma, and brightness. Chromacity includes hue and chroma (saturation).


Damn....I just wanted a number. Like the color temperature is 3400.

Back in the '70s, Minolta used to have a spot meter with a viewfinder, that thing was the bee's tits.

Never hurts to have a meter hanging around the neck.

I got this meter working but need to decipher the numbers. The instructions are written for scientists. Nothing for the layman.

I finally found what I needed in the..........product brochure. An advertisement for crying out loud.

The chromacity and color temperature graph makes things as clear as a spring day at the academy.

I think thats the same meter I have. Its out in the car. I used to use it all of time. My findings were usually the same. Indoor event lighting is really, really bad.

PS white balance is nirvana in RAW. PS filters are almost nirvana in JPEG. Some of the worlds foremost PS experts liberally shoot in JPEG btw.

I'm pretty much just shooting RAW these days. If you nail exposure JPEG works just fine. I don't always nail my exposure. Hence, RAW has saved my arse many times. Especially with crappy arena lighting.
