Need advice on choosing new dog..

Guys and Gals...
Just wanted to see what ideas you people have for a good dog. Right now I have a 125 pound Yellow Lab. He's about 2.5 years old. Best dog I could ask for.. He's my best bud, incredible watchdog, very very well behaved, just a great all around dog.
There are a few reasons why I am looking for another dog. The two biggest reasons are to keep Duke, the lab, company during the day, and for protection.
I am looking for another large dog (around 100 pounds). I need him to be very LOYAL and PROTECTIVE. Duke really wants to protect me and my girlfriend, but he just doesnt have that instinct in him. I need to know that she is in good hands when I am not home.. We had a recent incident..

So what do u guys reccommend? I have some buddies who have American Bulldogs, Dobermans, Rotties, Boxers..

Thanks for any help..

I have a english mastiff and he is the best dog I have every had. Very very loyal, and protective. They might be a little bit to big of a dog for what you are looking for, but they are great dogs, except for the constant snoring and slobbering and the occasional tearing up of any object that you can think of. Just my 2cents hope it helps.

Golden Retriever. Best dogs we've ever had. Get along great with the labs. Children as well. We have had three in my family. Will never get any other type of dog. Our golden we have now barks whenever my mom goes outside to get a package from a mailman. Very protective.

i would say go for a boxer or a mastiff..out of all the breeds these 2 seem to be the most loyal and both are great with kids....

Are you joking me? I have two scars on my face from two different boxers. They both attacked me one day. I had to get over 20 stitches because they bit through my cheek and into my mouth.

My family has always had German Shepards or Shepard mixes. I wouldn't get a Shepard if you have another dog. Maybe it was the ones we had, but they didn't get along well with others.

I have a rottie mix (pics of him is in my gallery). He loves other animals. He's around 78lbs (he needs to lose some weight). Extremely loving, but very protective over me. I'm afraid to see what kind of damage he would do if someone did something to me. He's very friendly with women, but when it comes to men . . . he watches their every move.

were they your boxers? how were they raised...obviously they need to be raised correctly..there are boxers out there who wouldnt hurt a fly let alone bite some one...it all depends on the setting of the home and also on the owner

They lived down the street, go out of their invisible fence and came into our yard and attacked me. My dad had to come out and beat the living shit out of them. They wouldn't leave without a fight.

I've seen many boxers that are raised well. But they are over-protective. They don't like other dogs. They are IMO one of the meanest types of dogs. Maybe I am biased though. Rottie's are nice dogs, some of the owners of Rotties treat them badly which is why they have a bad reputation.

thanks for the responses.. i was actually looking at a bull mastiff... i like the way they look and their temperment..

goldens are nice dogs but they are like my lab right now.. he TRYS to be protective but when push comes to shove he does not have that instinct in him.. he will get in front of me when he thinks i am nevervous and ill have my buddies punch me or push me and he will "bite" their arm and bark.. but its just not the same assertiveness as with a guard breed..

Id get a black lab or a golden retriever
I had a mixed collie/chow and she was the best dog i have ever saw
One time i was home alone and this guy came to try to sell meat and she wouldnt let him on the porch. Good thing he didnt know she was all bark and no bite

Our younger male is pretty brutal. He raises the hair on his back and can get pretty nasty. Doesn't take shit from anybody. He's small but weighs over 80 lbs. and is very strong. I think you get what you pay for in terms of dogs. The young one was 1,000 and is one of the best dogs we've had.

Rottweiler would be a good choice for protection.

Very highly trainable. YOu need to spend a lot of time with them while they are young though.

Get a female, should be right around 100lbs.

I have a doberman and he's the love of my life. Than spoiled little foker lives better than most people do. They need attention, but he's the mos loyal, gentle, smartest dog I've ever had. I can't imagine having any other kind of dog after him. Great with kids, too.

Yea bro.. Thats like my Lab.. 125 pounds of pure lap dog.. He is soo loyal and obediant.. The best dog I have ever had.. My gf almost got attacked by someone around where I live.. Funny cuz I live in a very wealthy neighborhood.. It can happen anywhere.... Anyways.. My lab is a very good watchdog, barks, growls and hair stands up whenever myself or my girl are approached by people we dont know.. The problem is that he is all bark.. He means well, but the poor guy jsut doesnt have that killer instinct in him. Dont get me wrong he is PROTECTIVE.. But he doesnt quite know how to carry it out... I just need a sense of security when my girl is home alone at night or taking a walk around the block at night.. Im not worried about the other dog being mean to other dogs.. Duke is 125 pounds and he can hold his own.. I just want a little more ballz in a dog ....

search by area for different types of dogs that need homes -- I found my last two this way; my AKC registered black lab is now 10 years old; I paid around $100 and went to the GA LAB Rescue Mission up in Canton GA -- they had around 9 labs all over 2 years old; so all were house broken and crate trained.
