Ah yes. The joys of a second job. Here is a nice story that is not that unusual for where I work:
N.H. - MANCHESTER - A Manchester man is charged with firing at least four rounds at the packed Omega nightclub Saturday night - one of which pierced the club's plate glass window and sent patrons waiting in line outside running for cover.
Eric Walters, 29, of 148 Lamprey St. then allegedly led police in a high-speed southbound chase on Elm Street that ended with him ramming his Ford Escort into the large rocks where the street dead ends.
When police tried to get Walters out of the heavily damaged sedan, he resisted and reached for what appeared to be a small black handgun, a police affidavit said.
Police later found a .380-caliber automatic handgun on the passenger floor with a live round in the chamber and two bullets in the magazine, according to a police affidavit.
No patrons were harmed in the shooting, which occurred about 11:52 p.m. on the West Auburn Street side of the popular downtown nightclub at 494 Elm St., police said.
Shortly before the shots were fired, Walters walked out of the bar with his face bloody and told police officers on detail he had been assaulted, Sgt. Mark Fowke said yesterday. Walters then tried to go back inside, but was barred by nightclub staff, Fowke said.
He appeared in Manchester District Court yesterday with a blackened right eye, his right forearm in a splint and several bruises across his forehead. He was treated and released at a local hospital after his arrest, police said.
Walters is charged with one count each of felony reckless conduct, disobeying a police officer, resisting arrest and aggravated drunken driving. A probable cause hearing is set for July 18.
He was being held yesterday at Hillsborough County jail on $65,000 bail. Police prosecuting officer Ronald Mello asked for $100,000 bail, saying Walters posed an "extreme danger to the community."
Not only did Walters shoot at the crowded nightclub, he took off in a car without its headlights on and sped down Elm Street at more than 75 mph, running the red light at the busy Queen City Avenue intersection, Mello alleged.
Walters also fought with officers, spitting blood on one of them, Mello said.
But defense attorney John Curran, who is representing Walters, sought lower bail, saying his client is highly educated and gainfully employed and had family and friends in the courtroom to support him.
Walters has a bachelor's degree and is working on a master's degree in business administration and holds a "very respectable job in the technical field," said Curran of the Bedford law firm of Getman Stacey Tamposi Schulthess Steere.
"He has no criminal record whatsoever," Curran said.
Curran asked the court to ensure all audio and video tapes Manchester police and the Omega nightclub have of the incident be preserved.
Curran had no comment after the hearing and did not return a telephone call.
