My DVD/CDROM drive won't work....

On my laptop...it will spin if for a few secs and then stop.....my computer can't detect anything or even find the device.

Any ideas?

Sounds to me like it isnt working.

I'd say the computer is rejecting the dvd drive....Much like you get rejected from anal.

while it's on try taking removing the drive and popping it back in and see if anything happens. you also might want to check your BIOS and see if the drive is visible to it.

NB...how do I check my Bios?

Does this require me to be a contortionist?

reboot your puter, before the OS loads it should ask you to press some keys to get in the system setup or someshit.

I reset the default on the bios....but at cdrom it says none....WTF?

The drive sounds fucked to me if that's the case. Looks like you have to suck it up and buy another? Was it just a DVD/CD Rom drive? You can get those for $30. It's not that big of a hit. Computers are a lot like cars. Parts will wear out. Sometimes quick than others. They don't last forever.

It is an internal drive in my laptop....it isn't even a year old, and the drive was very rarely used. But I may have to buy one.

Can you change the bios line item yourself. Does it allow you to tab to the field that says none or whatever?

If not then try reinstalling the drivers and setup for the cd/dvd rom drive. You can dl those off the web usually from the manufacturers site. That might cure your bios problem.

And if it doesn we've at least frustrated you further.

No-butt-sex-ford-boy.

LMAO.

No....it wouldn't let me tab there. I'll look into the drivers.

What does a "!" next to CDROM mean? That was on another screen within the BIOS.....I changed it to !, but then when I set to the default, it was removed.

I think the ! shows up when someone types in !. Is there another section in the bios for hardware changes. Some newer bios versions have a display area then a setup area. I dunno why.

You know....I've learned to do the opposite of whatever you tell me to do. Things just seem to work out better.

When you boot the laptop, does the rom drive access light not come on for like a second during the beginning?

If not, dead drive or maybe just the cable come loose inside.

If it does come on, I'd say driver or conflict issues with the drive..
Check what the Windows Control Panel / SYSTEM / Hardware tab says for cd rom drives. Thats where you would see if the driver is whacked.. But seeing as you have an ! in the BIOS, I'm betting cable loose inside...

Like TheHaterBoy said, call them peeps up and give them the what 4 on the whoreanty...

Unless you bought this thing in some alley in Detroit.

The light comes on...even when I put a disc in there, it'll come on and spin.

I put the ! there and then removed it...when I first went into the BIOS it wasn't there.

IT is a Dell.....I'll buy I new drive before I'll send it in and let them try and fix it for a year. But I'm going to try and check that one thing you told me to check.

Thanks Richard!

"Its a Dell" You sure do have a habit of buying crap.

Start>right click "my computer">click properties> hardware tab>Device manager>right click dvd/cd rom>click properties>driver tab>click uninstall.

Then reboot.

If that doesn't work proced to step 2.

Punch wall.

Step 3

Cry like a baby

Never helped me.

Usually a show of force will let the computer know that you are the alpha male and make it comply.

violence is always the answer.

It sucks that it's a laptop and that it's fucking up after only a year. The drive on the laptop is going to be more like $100 and since it's a laptop I'm not sure you want to install it yourself so then there the extra charge for installation but some place do free installation.

It is not even listed in there.....now what?

It sounds fucked to me like I originally said. The Bios is supposed to be able to see the CD Rom and hard drive attached on IDE cables and flobby drive no matter what. Since it's not even showing up on Bios you could have a bad cable or a bad drive. It could have the wrong jumper setting but I doubt that since I'm assuming it worked at one point.
