what's the deal with this stuff now... i was gone a week and i hear they started cracking down like crazy recently?

friend told me that they started cracking down on people using kazaa. they usually get people for uploading music... not really downloading, but if you have a giant share folder, you may be in danger

RIAA downloads a song from you, grabs your IP. Then does a trace route back to see who the ISP is. Then fax the info to the state that issues a subpoena. The RIAA faxes the subpoena to the ISP and they have to give your name and address to them.

RIAA files a copyright infringement lawsuit and sends you a settlement notice of $750-$15,000 per song. If you have the older Kaazaa or similar, they can scan your whole collection. If that happens then expect a settlement that will bankrupt you. If you cannot pay their settlement demand and it goes to court you are guaranteed bankrupt because I am pretty sure that the penalty is $250,000 per song.

So far they have slammed grandfathers who pay for their grandchildren’s computers. Parents of teenagers. The people next door types.

The RIAA has also been recently accused of cooking the books to make it appear that they have been losing money due to the MP3 craze when they have actually increased sales/profits 8%.

I know I cannot promote violence to create change. Under the new Patriot Act that is terrorism. But I will say that I will be one of the first people in line to donate to their defense fund.

RIAA Hit List

The subpoenas are flying, and we're naming names. Are you on the list?

By Tech Live staff

The recording industry has launched a sweeping effort to identify and shut down individual song swappers, making good on recent threats to expand its legal battle against copyright theft.

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has now issued more than 911 subpoenas to Internet service providers across the United States, trying to get the names of people still offering music on file-sharing networks such as KaZaA and Grokster.

Today, "Tech Live" brings you the RIAA Hit List, the user names of file traders targeted in the recording industry subpoenas.

Last month, we brought you the story of Jesse Jordan, a 19-year-old college student who became one of the first to be hit with a lawsuit by the RIAA. Jordan settled his case by paying $12,000 to the RIAA.

The following user names were culled from subpoenas filed with the US District Court in Washington, DC. All subpoenas, incidentally, are being served by the Los Angeles law firm of Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp. A total of 253 RIAA subpoenas were listed as of July 22 through the federal court system's paid online database, PACER. The actual subpoenas are available to view online in about half the cases.

The court documents don't show individual users' real names. They do show file-sharing network user names, the user's ISP, the user's IP address, and a sampling of copyright songs the user allegedly made available for download. To date, many ISPs have been contacted, including Pac Bell Internet, SBC, Charter Communications, Comcast, Adelphia, RCN, and Time Warner.

Following is a list of the first user names from our review of the subpoenas.

Just keep your Kazaa Lite updated and you should be fine

they installed an index to block all RIAA ips from downloading from you.

well they've already gotten a few losers to pay fines, so I guess it really doesn't matter if they could get a prosecution or not.

supernav said:
Yeah yeah. HOW are they going to prove it was YOU who did it?

Just say you have 3 friends living with you. And it wasn't you. remember THEY HAVE TO PROVE *YOU* DID THE INFRINGEMENT. Simply ordering the ISP line means shit.

Or tell them hackers took over your computer and probably ran kazaa in the background. You know how much hacking is done on the internet tehse days?

They will never be able to get one single successful prosecution.

Yep, just use the "I bought the PC at a flea market" defense. Kazaa was already installed, as were the songs.

i recently downloaded the new Ben harper CD, and only 3 of the songs work (the first 3 oddly enough)
all the other files just play a blank 3 seconds and automatically move to the next song. Is this my comp fucking up, or a form of copyright protection?

1. RIAA hires other companies to do their scanning. So just blocking RIAA IP's means little.

2. They've also hired companies to put out junk files with the most popular filenames, hissing or talking in the middle of tracks, etc.

And From Zero, if everyone moves their music out of shared folders, that's the end of filesharing. No more stuff.

I think you just have to prove you bought the CD or owned it at one time. Then you can make as many copies of it as you want for personal use. you were just using Kazza for the sole purpose of playing the mp3 you converted and had no idea people were uploading them.
Oh and your entire CD collection got stolen out of your car.

dunno might work

fuck, you guys just scared the shit outta me, i just moved all my music from my shared folder to another, and uninstalled kazaa lite lol.

lol... problem solved...

Only canadian (non-US) file holders.

Americans can't prosecute Canadians since we're out of their federal jurisdiction. So essentially Canadians can share or host files to upload.

They go after whoevers name is on the ISP account.

I have a pretty extensive music collection on my computer, but I never shared any before (just porn and software), as the constant uploading would drain my bandwidth. However, after reading this bullshit, I was so incensed I moved every MP3 I have (about 800) back into my shared folder.

Fuck the RIAA.

I'm in Canada too, so theres no worries on my end. :)
