I'm reading the specs, do you need the 8600 or will the 8300 work for you (100 less and the main difference is power, '2 x 600W @ 4 ohms vs 2 x 300W @ 4 ohms)?

600w will take my house down!

Makie is making some nice stuff. For powered you could also look at Yamaha.

I haven't used a powered board in a long time. I use the 48 channel Makie Onyx and it is Awesome!

I'd go with Yamaha too.

The usual choices are Mackie, Peavey, Behringer, and Yamaha. Of those, Yamaha is the only brand that you'll also see at a Rolling Stones concert. Avoid Behringer like the plague.

I mainly use it when I play with a friend at some local shows, small venues.. I had the XR 8300 and it was plenty loud so I think the XR 8600 would be overkill but for $100 why not?

I loved the 8300 but I figured I'd try something new maybe? what brand do you use MM?

why avoid Behringer? bad experience? I was looking at a behringer and it had the karaoke function on it which eliminated lyrics.. wouldn't really use it but seems like a cool function. What other mixers can do that? I never really read the manual on mine.. hell it could have done it

the band I'm in currently hires a soundguy who uses a high end Crest System I just have my tube Amp mic'd.

oh we aren't that big.. I'll have to send you some demo's sometime.. This weekend I mic'ed up my tube amp but I like going through the power mixer for feedback on the monitor.. just how I've always played.. I'm not as advanced as you tho so I do the same thing I was taught to do

would love to hear it, feel free to send it to me anytime. I have some new stuff soon, been thru 3 singers over the winter - landed a great one that can sing like Grace Slick or Stevie Nicks. I still have to go into the power mixer since we record all sessions.

My band uses Yamaha and Allen and Heath.

I bought my XR 8300 used from a friend with 2 speakers and a monitor.. if I upgraded to the 8600 I'd need new speakers.. what are some good speaker / monitor sets that can pump out that kind of volume?

Behringer stuff is made by slave labor in China, and most of his stuff is a carbon copy of some other brand. His mixers are cheap Mackie copies. I think the Behringer R&D department is a Xerox copier. They use cheap parts and their stuff is flimsy.

The speakers he has now should still work.

I'm not familiar enough with the offerings in that sector of the market to have a valid opinion about speaker options. From what I've heard the Yamahas are reasonable but kind of "boxy" or "cardboardy" sounding, and the Peaveys have a nasty fatiguing "edge" that rides on the upper end of vocals. Some of the low-end JBL stuff can be cheap-n-cheerful.
