muscle loss in running?

i be kiz

New member
right now i've fixed my diet to include mostly protein with a few carbs and healthy fats (flax oil, etc.) i am running because i have fat covering my lower abs (only my lowest set it's kinda wierd) I run for about 40 min 5 times a week and im concerned that i may be loosing muscle with the fat im trying to burn off...is my concern unfounded? if it isn't, what would be ideal to do in my situation.

No, it's not an entirely unfounded concern. You'll generally sacrifice some lean muscle mass if you want to drop to a fairly low body fat level.

For some people, the last area they lose bodyfat is around the lower abdomen. So just keep eating slightly below maintenance and do your cardio - if you notice that you're dropping weight too fast (like more 2lbs. a week or more) you might be losing too much muscle. Keep it slow and steady and you'll be fine.

I would not run to much. Do something more like speed walking, where you are still doing cardio but not at such a high pace where you are burning muscle more.

When you exert yourself at a high pace, you are more likely to burn mucles.

The CKG program on this board is ideal for your goal; might want to look into it (though it is pretty hardcore).

Also, try to do your running in the morning. Accvording to Bob Glover's The Competitive Runner's Handbook, that is the ideal time to run to lose fat.

My buddy who place 3rd in Mr.Ohio did cardio daily, but NEVER on on an emty tank and he said that was they key to not losing muscle....+ gear, of course......
