Muscle gain while on Prendisone???

Grim Divinity

New member
Ok.. I start Prendisone tomorrow 9 5mg tabs a day... I need to know if it is at all possible to gain muscle while on a catabolic steroid. I just got out of the hospital a month ago so I am severely under weight (170 lbs). My muscle is coming back quickly but I'm afraid that the prendisone is going to stop it totally.

Do you guys have any knowledge on this? I'm not on any anabolic steroids by the way. I've been natural for 1 and half now.

I'd like to know this too. I might be prescribed Prendisone as soon as next week for Kidney failure... I'm going to ask my Specialist to exhaust every other treatment option first though. After I saw what Prednisone did to a friend of mine a few years ago... I swear, I don't want to go near that drug. Earlier tonight at dinner, I started crying when I was telling my mom what it did to my friend Phil... I've never seen a drug cause sides like that before. He looked like he had Cushings Syndrome... massive amounts of swelling and water retention. I can't put my body through that.

yes it will add 'mass' but not the mass you want and then its when you take the meds for a long time, years in some cases months in other. not a good idea to try and grow while on prednisone. if your doctor thinks you need it then there is something wrong and you should worry about getting and staying well.

Well I do need it for my colitis... but I don't want to stop working out. Working out is my life. If I stop working out then this disease has totally won.

I will be taking it for six weeks... hopefully that will put me in remission and then I will be able to gain for sure. It would be nice to know if it is possible at all to gain even a little muscle while on it.

Good luck GD. Make sure to keep us posted on what transpires with the treatment... its important for me know.

my girlfriend has been on it twice and it made her blow up like a pufferfish. It has no anabolic properties. It will make you eat out of control and retain tons of water. It will give you fat deposits on your body that you will have trouble loosing for the rst of your
life:( It will give you energy and that is about it. I would not touch it with a 10' pole:(

Yeah, me neither, but these 2 guys need it for severe medical problems; they don't have much of a choice. You're right about the potential sides, BUT those sides are dose and duration dependent, and many of them are reversible, if the course of treatment is not too chronic.

Bro, do so research

you have the internet at your hand; get online and research treatment for your conditiond, maybe even get a docs consultation. Sometimes they are free. Ive got to believe there are other treatment options. Good luck

You are not in a very good situation. Increasing you protein intake would make no sense considering that it can't be used to syn. new muscle. Workout, but keep them short and sweet. Get in, get out. Then after treatment try a mild....and I mean mild stack to try and gain so size. A big stack won't help you cause you will loose it all after its over. You need to watch what you eat. Not much of a choice bro, you will have a lot of work after all this is over.

How long is your treatment cycle? I have spent long durations on prednisone (upto 80mg daily) and I can tell you that I felt pretty good, no aches or pains, but I did put on a lot of water weight and had an increase in apetite. I also got sick a lot since it hampers the immune system. Gains for me were far and few between while on that high of a dose which I was at for many months. At half that, and for a shorter duration effects should be less dramatic.

I would not advise working out while taking prendisone. Just take it untill you can get off and come back full strength. Prendisone will increase your chances of getting a cold or flu. Working out would only make your immune system have to work that much harder.

Good luck!

This sucks what happens if say you were on anabolics and were taking prendisone at the same time? What would happen? Would it stop the wasting of muscle mass at all?

Well..... it has been 3 days. My symptoms of colitis are pretty much gone (that's awesome). I have noticed a huge increase in energy although my doctor says it is false so to try not to let it fool me into thinking that I have endless energy. I havn't noticed any mood swings yet. I did seem a little restless last night trying to get to sleep though.

There is also an increase in appetite.. nothing tremendous though. I seem to be starting to show some water retention around the face and my mucles seem kind of flaccid.. you'de think the water retention would make them tighter.. oh well.

I'm going to go to the gym for very quick workouts mabye concentrate on Very high weight low rep to see if I can try to keep my strenght up.

I'm only on 45mgs a day for 6 weeks and actually as of tomorrow my doctor said he's going to start a dosage reduction. So I'll slowly be tapering off... hopefully I won't see many more symptoms.

I may ask my doctor about prescribing me anavar as losing muscle mass in detrimental to my mental health :)

Yeah, Prednisone will cause an increase in energy levels; sometimes almost manic in nature, and can cause insomnia and sleep disturbances.
Good luck w/ the colitis, the taper is important, follow the doc's protocol.

I dont think at that dose, especially if starting to taper off you will have anything to worry about, dont count on your doc prescribing var. I would just keep working out, make sure to wash hands alot and avoid rubbing face to reduce chance of getting sick.

Thanks for the good thoughts guys..

Man, when you try not to touch your face so you won't get sick you realize how much you want to touch your face... IT IS DRIVING ME TO MADNESS!!!!!!

Grim, There are other less harsh treatments for Colitis. My fiance has Colitis and was put on prednisone, but after 3 weeks of side effects, she refused to take it. Have your doctor look into a drug called Colazol or Colazal (spelling).... She has been on this now for 6 weeks. It has stopped her Colitis, and she has not had any side effects. Hope this helps bro. Do some research on this SERIOUSLY, and stay away from the Prednisone.

Do you mean Asacol by any chance?

Nope! Go on yahoo and do a search for: COLAZAL ( balsalazide disodium ). It's a new drug introduced recently.

Hi, just started a similar dosage of the prednisone myself. Started at 40 mg for two weeks and am now tapering by 5 mg every week until Im off of it. Just wondering if you were able to make gains in the gym during your duration of the prednisone?

Hi there, I was on a weeks course of 40mg a day back in May and it always makes me feel like WonderWoman! I managed to kick-start my training with it and trained like a beast that week and it set me in really good stead and now on a very succesful run of training and muscle gain. Just make sure you train hard during that time and drink loads of water. You will feel more hungry but make sure you eat plenty of protein and NO CRAP! Good luck. :)

While it is catabolic, and long term use lead to dependence (you can die if u stop abruptly, cortisol is a life essential hormone), if you look at the prescribing info for winstrol depot (Zambon) it's used to counter the catabolic effects of corticosteroids.

All AAS can be used, but take into consideration why you're on the prednisolone in the first place.
Maybe rest is needed, then I'd only supply a very light course of AAS to prevent catabolism. Or if really sick, maybe avoid AAS altogether.

I see this thread is old, if anyone has any current questions regarding this I will try to answer more in depth.
Get well. Be happy. ;)

Dude be careful on that. One time for my arthritis when they were trying to find something that would get it under control they stuck me of 40MG a day of prednisone...less than what you are saying...within 2 weeks I could not even watch tv without wanting to cry everytime anything even remotely sad happened. Just trying to talk to a girl would have my hands shaking. I went to my family DR and she immediately took me off it and said this was a common side effect of too much prednisone and that the arthritis DR would have to try something else.
