Money does not make you happy...

I just want to vent a little. I am 20 years old and HATE my job. The only upside is that i am able to be on Elite all day(which is pretty good), besides that it is super boring. I HATE coming to work everyday, don't get me wrong i am not a lazy person i just hate my work. I am a computer programmer and find NO JOY in my job whatsoever, the best comment i have ever heard "money does not make you happy." I make more money than all my friends combined, and still hate my life, why becuase i don't enjoy what i do. I just bought a car (BMW 2001), so unfortunately i am stuck working here whether i like it or not. A word of advice to everyone, do what makes you happy, not what makes you money. I went to school becuase i saw a quick easy way to make money at a young age, now i am stuck doing something i don't enjoy and spend most of my time stressed and unhappy. For what, a nice car? ...its just not worth it. Money does not make you happy, and i don't care how much you have, if you don't like what you are doing to make it, its a waste of time. And life is too short to waste..

Why is that the things we need to know in life we only figure out after we've been through whatever it is that we needed the information before we made the decision that got us there in the first place.

Did that make sense...I'm not going to re-read it.

I'm not even going to read it once.....you lost me after the word "why"....coming from you, Wodin, that can only mean mass confusion :)

ture dat.....

It's not the money that's making you unhappy. It's the job. And the fact that you sold out to make it.

Money can't buy happiness, but it can sure put one hell of a down payment on it. :D

You couldn't be more right my friend. I'm 24, and pretty much in the same spot as you. I contemplate selling my car, and start a different career that I would enjoy... but I'd make about $20000 less per year.
Karma coming to you my friend!

I whole-heartedly agree M56M.

And yes WODIN, that made sense.. :)

After all, we wouldn't learn anything if we didn't make
mistakes.

Money just gives you a sense of security. Thats it.

I respect people for who they are NOT but how much
they are worth.
Thats the mark of a true friend. True friends are priceless IMO

I know exactly what you mean, i decided to not play college football becuase of my HS girlfriend something i will always regret. Something i would never repeat twice...

In life you don't know what you have missed until its gone, and yeah i am only 20yrs old, but have lived like i was 50. Thats why you live and learn..

Good Karma for you buddy...

You could reconsider your career path?.

Right now, its the only trade i know. And with a large car payment i really can't go from here to work in McDonalds(not that there is anything wrong with that). I rather work and make less money and be happy, but now i don't have that option. I am going to school full time at night, taking a double major in Computer Science and Finance. So i have about 3 years left, hopefully things will brighten up then...

SOUNDS LIKE BUYING THAT CAR WAS AN UNWISE MOVE.IM ASSUMING THAT YOU DIDNT PAY IN FULL. MONEY IS COMPLIMENTARY TO LIFE.......IF YOU RELY ON IT SOLELY TO MAKE YOU HAPPY,YOU ARE FUCKED.....

TAKE THE CAR BACK AND GET SOMETHING CHEAPER,SOUNDS AS IF YOU ARE WORKING TO PAY FOR A CAR THAT YOU CANT AFFORD.

ALSO,THINK WHEN YOU HAVE IT PAID IN ABOUT 5 YEARS,IT WILL BE AN OLD CAR BY THEN.

No actually i can afford the car and then some. That is not the problem, with the money i make i am very comfortable. But what i am saying is that obviously without a job, the car will eat at my savings. And the car is a lease, i can't return it without a nice penalty and without fucking my credit up.

On top of that, i am looked upon by my family as the successful one, the one who will make it. Even though you shouldn't live for anyone but yourself, it would be hard to dissappoint all of them too.

The only people who think money doesn't make you happy are those who don't know what to do with it.

So you have tons of money and hate your life because your job sucks and you're bored? QUIT YOUR JOB AND USE YOUR TONS OF MONEY TO START YOUR OWN BUSINESS THAT YOU MIGHT ENJOY RUNNING!!!

Not that hard dude.

Hey buddy i am not a multi-fucking millionaire. There is a LARGE difference between having money for nice things & to live comfortably and having money to start a new business. Then again its not the fact of working for somebody that bothers me, its the fact that i don't like what i do. And believe me i know what to do with my money becuase i save it, and i spend it on things i like. Drive a nice car, designer clothes, vacations wherever i want...but that was not the point. THE POINT WAS: that money does not make you happy, if you are doing something you don't enjoy to get it. <-do you want to argue that point?

Let me tell you some people really like to be a smartass.

There are lots of ways to take a programming background and change what you do on a daily basis.
I started out as a programmer, and didn't like it.
Then I switched into a different field of programming (database) and liked it better.
Then I switched to a database employer that was making a product I thought important, and that helped a lot.
You can go into technical customer support, technical sales support, management, sales.
For myself, I got into database administration and love it, but I had to pay my dues as a programmer first. Nobody would have hired me as a database administrator if I were'nt a programmer first.

I agree it does not make you happy but can make a happy person even happier.

I know this has been said but take a look around and be thankful that you have a well paying job. Shit you get paid to surf this site, not bad IMO. You are still young and have many options available to you. When you are bored at work use this time wisely to develop a business or venture.

I was living the phat life I had a good job, made good money, my wife and I are best friends, drove a C5vette. Then with no notice I got layed off in June. It took me 3 months to find a job and now I dont make shit for money. I do get paid to surf this board though lol. I am a Network Engineer btw.

I am bored too all I do is read freakin message boards all day.

Just thought I would vent and throw in my 2cents.

Keep ya head up man, it could be much worse.

I hate being in debt! I feel like I'm in a prison.

If I was completly debt free----I would feel so much better

I'm not a wordly person---I'm very simple in what I need......

my dream would be to have a modest house that is PAID off, no debt and a decent income........

NOt to say that is the road to happiness---but I would have more time to be with my family and friends and enjoy life, instead of working all the time to pay off debt

You seem to be the only one who gets the point. You can have just enough money and be happy. Wanna get married? :D (hey it was worth a try)

john937,

To be honest i am not really loving the IT field too much. I have a good undertanding of DBA work also, and i do see what you are saying about it being better. And thats very true you need to pay your time/prove yourself as a programmer before stepping into other areas in the IT field. I am more into Finance and Economics personally, so i will have to wait til i finish my degree. Thanks for the advice.

Torch,

I know what you are saying, i am young and have alot of options. I will always keep my head up, even in the worst of situations. And i am sorry about you getting layed off, that sucks bro, but at least you found another job(that will let you hang out on Elite..LOL) It just sucks sometimes doing something 8 hours a day that i don't enjoy, but you know what it could be worse. Thanks buddy.

maybe instead of buying cars & designer clothes (im not trying to be insulting by saying this) you should save all your money to afford a modest pension. after another year of what you are doing, quit working full time and work part time (15 hours a week), and live off your pension while you go to college to learn to do what you love.

I do get what you are saying, the point is i went to school for this (Computer School) becuase i saw a good chance of getting a good paying job, and what i am saying, is that money does not fix everything, or necessarily make you happy. What you are saying is i guess an option now...

Thanks for the advice.

Of course money can't buy happiness. Nothing can.

"money can't buy me happiness, but I'm happy when I can buy what I want."

You are obviously a stupid, stupid person who does not deserve to have more money than me. I really don't believe you have money. Rich people usually have some sense of what to do with their money, and are usually not unhappy with being rich. If i had 40,000, i know exactly where and how to invest it, to where in a year, it would have multiplied itself by a few times, and I would be making only profit.

But if you are rich and unhappy, send me your money, I'll send you my consolence, and I'll be rich and happy.

I hope that is not directed towards me, becuase i didn't see that quote anywhere in any of my posts.

I am clearly STATING: that if you MAKE alot of money DOING something YOU DON'T ENJOY, IT DOES NOT MATTER HOW MUCH YOU MAKE YOU WON'T BE HAPPY!!!

Stillhere,

I don't think that is true, i believe if you find a job whether you make tons of money or just enough, and you enjoy what you do you can be happy. I also believe life thrives off hope, without it you really have nothing to live for. Good Point.

Money does not make anyone happy, but I doubt you will find something that does.
Humans live from hope to hope, keep hoping, nothing else matters.

Ah, just shutup.
I didn't mean you posted it. DID I SAY YOU ORIGINALLY POSTED THE SHIT? HELL NAH.

now listen here dumbass. Why don't you invest in something like real estate with "all" that money your making. You could open up apartments if you got a hella loan, and saved up for a few years. The profit off of such a thing would be unmatched. Then focus your buisnesses on real estate, and have your office at home.

GOD YOU ARE SO STUPID! IWOULD SACRIFICE MY MOM TO BE IN YOUR POSITION! i hate the bitch, but it still counts for something. If your sad, suck it up, walk it off, and get some brains rich boy.

Ok now i am a bit affended. I am not a "rich boy" first off. And i will do what i please with my money. I am not sitting here to brag about how much i have, or saying i am a fucking MILLIONAIRE. So calm the fuck down.

I went to Computer school in the morning...FULL-TIME, worked an internship for the company that i now work for in the afternoons, and went to college full time at night. I worked very hard for what i have NOTHING has been handed to me.

I am not looking for advice on my life, becuase regardless of what i chose i will succeed. What i am saying is that, yes i worked my ass off to get what i have, and now i have it. The money is good, but MY POINT (KEY WORD: point) is that working a job to make alot of money doesn't actually make you happy, working a job you ENJOY(another keyword: enjoy) to make ANY amount of money makes you happy.

PS: i know that there are other options, but right now at THIS moment there isn't. I am 20 years old, believe me its jus the beginning, i am completely aware of it. But i would like you to focus on the POINT!

Do you agree with it(the point that is)?

dang! I don't see any reason for slashing on this thread

Some people will not have any sympathy for someone who is making a good living----even though they are not happy

Money seriously is NOT the most important thing when getting into a career---

when I was 18, I almost went to school to become a programmer myself, JUST BECAUSE OF THE MONEY

But I talked to alot of people, and they convinced me not to do something just for the cash.......so glad I listened

But at least you have some great skills! Your career is just starting too---the world is full of opportunities! :D

Money can't buy happiness, but it will rent some first class affection!!

Being poor sucks, my company is laying me off December 21st from my 50k a year job. The field I'm in (electronics) is dead, I'll have to sell my house and find some shitty apartment if i wanna eat. I always laugh when people say money isn't everything, well people who HAVE money usually spew crap like that. Be glad you HAVE a fucking job there's alot of people right now who don't.

THIS THREAD MAKES ME GO HAHA........I JUST BOUGHT MY GIRLFRIEND AN AUTOGRAPHED JOHN TRAVOLTA PICTURE AND A COAT HE WORE IN FACE OFF..............DAMN I CAN ALWAYS FIND SOMETHING TO WASTE MONEY ON....BY THE WAY IT WAS HER BIRTHDAY.

I tell you what...I'm about to start a job I believe in my heart I will like and enjoy, it doesn't even pay as much as my job as a Bill collector including health and retirment benefits

If you find something you want to do more then go for it...But If you decide to stick with the money I'll be happy to open out a foundation in my name and you can donate some of that dough to me and use it as a tax write off

I'm sure we could work something out to where you would get a chunk of it back for a fee :)

well college did teach me alot more then my parents bargan for MUAHHHH!!!!!!

I'm still searching for a Tax Attorney for my future endevors so if you ever feel like going back to school I'm sure I can offer you excitment and lots of cash one day

TxCollegeGuy,

i've heard that before on elite. don't go into a career for the money.

im thinking of paralegal. 35k a year isn't bad, and i study law for fun. so i may get some pleasure from it.

I hear ya bro. I am also a computer programmer and I hated all my jobs up to my current one. I was making more money at my last job, but I LOOOOVE my current job so much I come in early, leave late, and actually look forward to it. If you're stuck in a place you hate you're not only doing a disservice to yourself, but also to your employer. A lot of things can contribute to your dissatisfaction.. like you're not challanged enough, or the environment sucks etc.. If you're a programmer, you shouldn't have any problems finding a new job.

GOOD LUCK

maybe no matter what job you have it will make you unhappy.
you cant tell me when you pick up your check that you dont have a little smile and a good feeling for a sec. i bet when your spending that money and driving the car your happy. happiness is a matter of time.
dont confuse the reason your unhappy with what can make you happy.

Well i guess we will see becuase right now all i have is time. So only time will tell...

nikolai_bolkov,

I don't mind being involved with investments, and finanace, i am just really sick of the IT bullshit. It will come in very handy in any field i chose but i am sure i don't want to do it forever.

freshr1 ,

Thats true finding a job in this field is not too hard, well right now its a bit tough with the Economy going through a rough time. I will wait til things begin to settle down.

KingJohn,

The point is ofcourse having money can make you happy, but what i am saying is that what you DO for the money comes FIRST! Take care.
