It is the prostaglandin that is used to force the uterus to "eject" the uterine lining and its "contents".. not a very pretty image... but you asked..

Orally, misoprostol is also used in combination with diclofenac in a medication called Arthrotec, which is a pain reliever. Another use is as an antiulcer med for people with gastritis. As an abortifacient like macrophage said, it is used orally and intravaginally.

RU-486 is mifepristone.
