Minocycline - Safety?

cheddar cheese

New member
My dermatologist has me taking 2 pills of 100mg minocycline for acne, a day.
I dont know how long he plans on having me take this but his son has been on it for 6 years. Is it safe to take that long?

Here are some things i found on rxlist.com, that dont sound too good:

ANIMAL PHARMACOLOGY AND TOXICOLOGY

Minocycline HCl has been observed to cause a dark discoloration of the thyroid in experimental animals (rats, minipigs, dogs and monkeys). In the rat, chronic treatment with minocycline hydrochloride has resulted in goiter accompanied by elevated radioactive iodine uptake and evidence of thyroid tumor production. Minocycline hydrochloride has also been found to produce thyroid hyperplasia in rats and dogs.

As with other antibiotic preparations, use of this drug may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi. If superinfection occurs, the antibiotic should be discontinued and appropriate therapy instituted.

anti-anabolic action of the tetracyclines

What do you think?

Depends on the individual. Everyone reacts differently to medications. However, the major issue with minocycline is sun exposure. I used minocycline for a non-acne related illness, but it did help with my acne. During this time, October to March, my sun exposure was limited.

im currently on that drug and ive noticed small cysts growing on my balls i have to go to a surgeon to get them removed it sucks

you have to realize that clinical trials usually only assess drugs' efficacy in treating any particular affliction; adverse side-effects are reported even if 1% of patients in clinical research experience them - they serve as a warning of potential danger, but the chances are very low nonetheless. That being said, minocycline, tetracycline are relatively safe drugs.
Just in case read up on Aspiring, Ibuprofen and see how many side-effects they have - yet it doesn't stop millions of people and practitioners from utilizing them, since the danger probability is extremely low; lol, these drugs are OTC!
