Attack of the Mexican Immigrants?
Posted by: Anonymous
The Detroit News reports: latino critics are saying that the new Staw Wars Episode 2 movie "toys with American paranoia about Mexican immigration", in reference to the clone army, Jango Fett, and little Boba Fett.
Despite the fact that Temuera Morrison (who played Jango Fett) is a New Zealander, his close resemblance to a latino was good enough for the eight-person Detriot News board brought together to review the film.
"He totally looked Latino", said Martina Guzman, one of the eight reviewers.
"And his kid," Jose Cuello, another reviewer, "looks even more Latino." It even reminded him of "those Reagan ads in the 1980 campaign, that suggested if Nicaragua went communist, you'd have wild-eyed Mexicans with guns running across the California border."
The clone army, based on Jango Fett, reinforce the thought that thousands of these modified clones taking over the galaxy respresent thousands of mexicans taking over the US.
There is also an unusual call about these clones being made on a planet called "Kamino", which sounds similar to the Spanish word "camino", which means "road" or "I walk".
Lucas was not available for comment, but a Lucasfilm spokeswoman, Jeanne Cole, says, "This is the first we've heard of this. Star Wars is a fantasy movie filled with creatures and aliens from all different planets and universes and galaxies. There is no basis for this."
Besides the few on the board who thought of the Latino reference, there were three arab-Americans on the board who jumped at the oddity that Jango would call his son "Baba".
"I frankly think the bounty hunter is Arab," said Imad Nouri, one of the arab-Americans on the board, "He's basically a terrorist, and 'baba' is Arabic for 'Father'."
The article continues with a few more ironic references, some more of their board member comments, and comments from other sources.
