Mercedes C230

is this a reliable automobile? Since its the introductory Benz a 1999-2000 model is about $15k, which is only about 4k more than a non luxury toyota or honda.

I have an slk with no problems since I got it. This is there low price version and it looks as such but it doe perform well as far as maintance issues. MB hasa solid reputation for service but no where as good as Lexus and the likes as there customer service is at best so so.

i knew it, i knew it i knew it. Before i posted this thread i considered not doing so because i knew people would start saying because it was the intro model that it was a commoner's benz.

Somebody had another thread about similiar cars; read my post on that.

Nordstrom,

Listen to who is telling you that it is not a real Benz. Then, stop laughing.

The problem with any MB - whether C class or SL55 AMG - is that you are eternally identified with Beverly Hills Dentists and personal injury lawyers. In short, the height of vulgarity and common-man affectations/aspirations of status.

You probably don't give a shit about any of that. If you can live with that, consider this: maintenance costs are always going to be high. Don't look at what you are paying for the car, look at the total cost of ownership.....

I think one of the main reasons i would want one is the interior. Leather, in dash CD, many standard luxury items all for about $4k more than a non-luxury ford. And the exterior is beautiful, even on a C230 (at least to me).

Maintenance costs were/are a worry of mine. A german auto, esp. a luxury auto is probably going to cost 3x as much to repair as a ford or toyota.

You're going to take it up the ass on maintenance.

I have a middle-of-the-group lexus and even though it is all Toyota under the hood (pretty much) I get ass-raped on maintenace. MB is even worse.

getting repairs on an older german car is in a class of its own......

btw, the stock wheels are ugly, buy some 17 inch AMG 5 spoke polished wheels

oil change equals $ 75.00, maintance every 15,000 miles equals betweeen $ 400.00 and $ 800 depending on type of service. I can afford it so I do and I love my car.

Yeah, you sound like someone who wants a MB just so they can say they have one. If you want a Mercedes so bad get a more respectable model, not a "C"heap class.

Or get something decent that you can afford. I laugh at all the brothas in my town who spend thousands on old school MB just so they can say they have one. For the same price you can get a new civic which will last you years.

nissan maxima? get a stick and u are in buisness.....you can be honest if the snob appeal gets ya.....i has me on a few things

i don;t think nordstrom gives a shit about snob appeal.

Flexed - I pay $400 for every 5K miles miantenance on the Lexus and every 20,000 nmiles another $1000. Performance tires my ass. :)

I'm getting screwed here.

snob appeal? I am not snobby nor act like one. I am just a cool cat driving a MB. Was always my dream car when I was younger.

Ah what a dick. The snob appeal is there of owning a benz but i would mainly want one for the interior.

it does a little, but it really is a nice looking car inside & out aside from the mercedes label.

i think it's the worst mercedes out there. I'd sooner get a honda accord.

jesus. And lexus is a toyota model. Acura and lexus seem reliable since their parent companies are so reliable but i didnt know maintenance was that high.

plus the insurance rates would be astronomical.

Does any company make a luxury interior on a reliable family sedan?

that is how i am with jaguars. i love them and love their racing team as well....i will be driving my xjr around and will be wearing some sweat pants at the same time:D

If it is still under warranty then regular maintenance is included in the sale price. We didn't pay for much in the first 5 years but just having to take it in at all bothered me.
It is a VERY smooth riding and quiet car for sure. I really notice it now that I'm down to driving a Mazda 626. It's almost like the Mazda has all the windows down all the time.

Maybe where you live but here I pay about the same as a Chrysler Sebring for maintenance and my C240 costed 10k$ more. I guess it's a US thing. At the same price, BMW, Audi and most american cars will be more expensive on this.

problem with the C230 is that its a complete entry level mercedes, and thus lacks many of the elements which makes the name Mercedes something that chimes into everyone's ears as a great car. With the C230, you end up paying for the name more than anything, and had you spent the same amount of money on a less-luxurious car, you'd actually end up getting a better one...

that said, the new C240 is actually quite decent, and is a mercedes worth owning.

tires where 400 a peice as I recall but other than that the maintance is not as bad though I have a guy who owns a shop that features german cars. the dealership i don't trust for repairs and he is certified MB

Who told you $400 apiece? I replaced the tires on my leased C230 (with the same ones that were on it) for $80 apiece. This was at the dealer too.

Tires or wheels ? Cause that's about the price I paid for my 18" AMG.

well what do u consider luxery? i mean you can find a used caddy for cheap, but they dont have good resale value at all

First of all, it seems that you've already made up your mind that you really like the car and willing to buy it.

Don't worry about maintenance, it's only a 4 banger and you can do all the basic maintenance yourself without a problem. It's too easy but takes time. Save yourself thousands that way. Almost all of the maintenace tasks, you can do it yourself. Unless you are a lazy motherfucker.

do you have any mechanical history? see i wouldnt trust my self.......

Unless you get the Kompressor it is a VERY slow accelerating car.

None, just my own experience. I always say " If you want something done right, do it yourself! "

All of the cars I owned in last 5 years were german. On all of them, I did all repairs myself. I just wanted to know how to do it myself and learned.

on the 0-100 km/h, yes, but 80-120 km/h, the C240 is amazing. Anyway, you dont buy a C240 for speed or acceleration.

BTW, the C230 Coupé and Sedan both come with the 190hp Kompressor engine.

MY tires where 400 a piece. Front has different size than back and both are costly as hell. $ 80.00 for a tire is dirt cheap.

I have Michelin Pilot Sport, 225/40ZR18 and 255/35ZR18 (staggered setup as well) and probably paid around 280$ each (they came with the AMG setup so that might explain the low cost).

Now I'll have to order some Pilot Alpin cause winter is closer then ever.....:frsty:

Well those don't sound like stock tires.

there not. took me looking everywhere and than having to settle to wait 4 days for the dealership to get them in.

Talk to AAP...he bought a C240 last year.

You'd assume AAP would want something higher end than an introductory C model. An E class or something.

Anyway im not buying a benz anytime soon im still in college. Its just the fact that an intro model that is almost in the same condition of a toyota is only about $4k more that made me think about it.

I think the guy's probably more interested in throwing a large chunk of his money at something that isn't going to depreciate.

A new C-class is gonna run you $35-40K and then three years later it's worth $15-20K. Ouch!! It happens with all cars but he's probably got better places to put his money.

if you buy a semi used (2-3 year old) car getting it for 50% of new value is possible. So if you shop around you can get a 1999-2000 c230 for $16k now and resell it for $10-12k in 2007.
