When and how much do you take it ?

I have trien 3mg, 1.5 and 1 mg pill and I have noticed the less I take the more effective

and about 30 minutes before sleep time

when I first began taking melatonin I started using .3-.6mg before bed and it helped. Now I'm using GNCs liquid melatonin and using 2.5mg before bed, however I make sure I that when I take it I wont have to wake up for at least 8 solid hrs. Usually any less and it will make it very hard to wake up without feeling very groggy.

I also use it occassionally, maybe 4-5 times per week, suppossedly your body adjusts to it if you take it continously.

OK
thanks for the info

Have you ever tried any other sleep aids ?

i would take 3g of NOW's chewabale melatonin. i would chew it a little and let it sit under your tongue and absorb it sublingually however. or you could use the liquid melatonin that GNC makes. also, if looking for good sleep aids, look under my post, or well, i posted it under Nutri-Wrestler in the "sleep-aids" thread.

I use 3mg Melatonin, usually Twinlab. I just can't take it too late or I wake up feeling really groggy. I've tried 5-HTP for a sleeping aid and it did nothing for me so I'll just stick to my melatonin.

I introduced melatonin to the market. The 3mg number that is most common is totally arbitrary. When we first got test samples from the lab we were taking 30mg... 100mg... even 1,000mg. We didn't have anything to base the number on... so we settled on 3mg for the first couple labels... and it became the market standard. I've seen studies that recommend as low as .1mg... but it is still not a decided issue.

How could you know how much is effective for you ?

By trying 0.1, then 0.5 then 1mg and so on ?

I've been using Melatonin for a couple years now, and i started w/3mg and went up gradually from there. Especially in conjunction with p.m. workouts, i have found 12-20mg to be the best for me (about an hour after I take the pills I am down for the count, and wake-up feeling very refreshed).

I have just read a studies claiming that for sleep purpose the dosage could be as low as 0.1 to 0.5 g

Sounds like a great sleep aid. I've run into probs over the past few years with my sleeping pattern; gotta love shift work.

Unfortunately, I live in Canada, and as far as I know, it's not available here. Can any other Canucks out there help me out?

You can find melatonin in Canada

I'm back trying valarian root, seems to work ok. Prior to falling off the wagon huge, and letting my workouts slip, I was taking my own version of ZMA prior to bed; I had taken a name-brand ZMA, and gotten KILLER sleeps with it. A bit pricey, so I made my own with magnesium, zinc, and a multi-B.

One thing I noticed is that some magnesium works, and some doesn't. I think (and please, add comments) it all depends if it's bound with calcium--if it is, it doesn't work. Hard to find a plain magnesium supplement out there that doesn't have SOME calcium in it.

zma = placebo
hate to tell ya bro

I would add it is also a great marketing coup :)

Those guys made so many people think that Zn and Mg are as effective as roids !

valerian did jack for me last night

:(
booohoohoo

Yeah, valerian is hit-and-miss with me. Slept like a baby the other night, didn't take anything. Few days earlier, I took valerian AND benadyl, and was wide-eyed till 2:30 AM.

It'd be nice to find something OTC that worked the same way, everytime.

Has anyone ever tried Gotu Kola ?

Tried it years ago as a stimulant, I was under the impression it was similar in nature to ginseng? Didn't notice anything in the way of, well, anything :) So I haven't tried it again.

Haven't heard much in the way of research about it either.

Melatonin seems to effect the circadian rhythm, sometimes after taking it I get a jet lag type effect, sometimes it makes my sleep deeper, still experimenting though...

Just got my hands on some melatonin for the first time; I've tried is the past 3 nights, with mixed results. I ***think*** it's working; maybe I expected some deep, zen-like sleep. I know I've been sound asleep when my alarm goes off in the AM, so at least it's keeping me asleep.

I still seem to wake up frequently, though.

I'll continue to use it (as long as I'm not working nightshift) and see what happens.
