McNABB highest paid player?

cure

New member
PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia Eagles and quarterback Donovan McNabb have agreed on a contract extension.

Team spokesman Derek Boyko would not disclose details Thursday, but The Philadelphia Inquirer, citing unnamed sources, said the deal was for 12 years and $115 million contract, which would make the 25-year-old McNabb the highest-paid player in NFL history.

The contract, which runs through 2013, also includes a $20 million signing bonus, the newspaper reported.

Boyko said the Eagles planned an afternoon news conference to announce the deal.

McNabb was in the fourth year of a seven-year contract, under which he received a singing bonus of $11.3 million -- the highest ever given by the Eagles.

An NFL team has never signed such a lengthy contract with a player who still has that much time left on his current deal.

McNabb, the No. 2 overall pick in the 1999 draft, is in his third year as a starter for the Eagles. He's off to the best start of his career, completing 61.3 percent of his passes for 791 yards, eight touchdowns and only two interceptions. He also leads the team with 118 yards rushing and two TDs.

Since his first season, the Eagles are 27-13 in games that McNabb started

Uh...oh.

Mark my words. 2 years from now you will look back at this as the deal that destroyed a potential dynasty.

it's pretty hard to have a dynasty in this day and age.... with the salary cap and free agency.... it ain't gonna happen.

and when you're paying mcnabb this much, you sure as hell won't be able to afford a decent supporting cast.

The nature boy answered it. You are going to see Major cap problems with a salary like this.

A - Donavan is in his 3rd season.
B - he has 10 - 12 years of playing time left.
C - The contract is for 11 years.
D - He is a running QB. Productive life is about 8 years tops!

I think they should start getting major press at the other end of the spectrum.
Like:

The Dallas Cowboys just signed the all time lowest paid player in NFL history today. Marshall Jones will now be filling his role on the team as center, and agreed to a 15 year contract for which he will be paid $14 over that time, as well as 7 paper clips and a stuffed bunny named "Mr. Sqeezy". Mr. Jones was quoted as saying "I like ball. Ball go BOOOM. heeerelll"
Several sources say that Mr. Jones is said to have Downs Syndrome, but exhibits amazing retard strength on the field.
Cowboys officials are currently working on fashioning a new helmet for Jones' oversized head - plans involve the use of a garbage can and spray paint.
The Cowboys opener can be seen at home this week, in which Marshall will be starting and claims that this one goes out to "meeeeer" - we wish them luck.

First off they are 6-8 million under the salary cap and have most of their players locked into long term contracts. The eagles front office is not stupid, they would not have given McNabb this amount of money without considering their own future first. Not only that but players like Troy Vincent and Bobby Taylor won't be around for much longer. Look for Lito Sheppard, Michael Lewis, Sheldon Brown to eventually replace, Bishop, Vincent and Taylor in the secondary. Westbrook will take over for Duce Staley within the next year and John Runyan will soon retire.

After working their problems out for years the eagles are finally in a spot to excell. Do you actually think they'll fuck up their future by signing the greatest quarterback in the NFL to a huge contract? I think not.

D - He is a running QB. Productive life is about 8 years tops!

I'm not sure if you realize but whenever he scrambles he never gets touched unless he decides to take it out on his opponent. He is no Steve Young or Kordell, but probably the best conditioned athlete in all of football.

How is signing the best player on your team, let alone one of the best all around players in the NFL to a long term deal destroying a potential dynasty. Instead, it is just the beginning of a GREAT dynasty. He is the corner stone of the team and iis now locked up for many years to come.

The Eagles have a 80% chance to win every game when #5 steps on the playing field.

Wodin, what is your favorite team? I can pretty much bet the bank that they're not even close to having a dynasty like the PHILADELPHIA EAGLES.

COWBOYS :lmao:

Yep and the cowboys are still paying aikmans contract....which is very similar to this one!

BULLCRAP!

Aikman was like 33 (signs a 7 year extension worth 87 million?) when he signed the contract and had already experienced numerous injuries and concussions. Not only that but the cowboys continue to misuse the cap signing free agents to absurd contracts.

its understandable that your pissed off. A team of coke heads and rapists gets injured and you get pissed off when they cant play no more, let alone they're rival takes over as a dynasty.

Your telling me that if Aikman and Irvin never got injured and beat up that the cowboys wouldnt be a good team. Im sorry injuries ruined the almighty Cowboys, but shit happen, that doesnt mean its gonna happen to the Eagles. McNabb can at least run and get away from being hit so many times that its gonna ruin his career.

I'm not saying shit. You are. I'm saying that this is just the beginnig for the Eagles.

You probably will win the Superbowl this season and probably could win 3 in a row. But human nature being what it is you will have a few guys wanting more money since Donavan got a better deal, etc.....

The only player who could demand anything is Brian Dawkins but in no way does he even deserve close to what McNabb is making. Dawkins is the leader on defense and will get an extension within the next couple of weeks guaranteed!

i'm guessing it has a ton of money to hit them this season.. they werent 8 million under, i thought they were like 18 million under cap... they were in better cap position than any team except the cards... BEFORE cutting trotter.. all the vets they brought in earn minimum..

PRAISE DONOVAN FOR LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your trying to rain on my parade and I dont like it, damnit. Its probably the best move in Philadelphia sports in many many years. Im happy goddamnit, stop trying to ruin my fun, plus your a Cowboys fan, I have to hate you. :D

3 in a row... highly unlikely. it's way too competitive... plus playing in playoff games for so many seasons takes it toll... physically and financially. Peoples bodies start to break down and players leave for greener pastures. Look at the rams.. all their success is now catching up to them. Teams have a 2 year window at the maximum when all the pieces are in place.

Nah they were 10 million under until they signed Freeman and some of their rookies...now their at about 8 million under the cap.

I think 3 in a row is possible if you have star players who don't get overly greedy and you can bring in top talent at other skill positions over the 3 year window while your star players are peaking. Yet as often happens big contracts get in the way of this strategy.

I think the team that might do it is New England.

according to the website this looks like it actually helps them for the next few years too... he was only making 3 mill this year and the sit says "but" he will be making 6.5, 7.2 then 8.something... plus 11.3 bonus... not bad at all... if you have the money and have a player like mcnabb you keep him there for life... he will be an elway, aikman, marino (except he will win the big one).... i love it, i never have to worry about mcnabb killing the eagles after leaving via free agency... FUCK YOU TROTTER!!! nice game ya got in washington.. hahahahahaha

i'm sorry, its a 20 million bonus??? god damn!!!! \

and ya, sheppard, brown, and lewis will all be starting within 3 years...

fuck, i like the way brown hit sunday, that was awesome...

right now, the eagles are a walking mash unit so for the first time in my life i'm looking forward to a bye week in 2 more weeks.

dont get me eagle thinking before work man.. i still have 2 days till game time... fucker!!!

mcnabb=god.... give him anything he wants... i'd bet he would restructure if it came to it to help the team win.. plus, the entire time elway was in denver they were able to field a team and compete, mcnabb is the same way... he's worth every cent you could give him...

oh ya, and the cap goes up too so that makes it a little less hurtful.

Reminds me that last week i decided to go buy a new jersey and retiring my #12 Cunningham jersey. So i pick up the a new white McNABB jersey. The guy selling it tells me i have nothing to worry about because he will be there for a couple of years... i tell him he'll be there for his whole career...one week later they sign him for 12 years...THANK ME FOR THIS!! That jersey was a great buy!

Isnt this considered a dynasty???

Yeah .... but I'm saying that money is going to get in the way and it won't happen.

Average career of an NFL player is about 4 years. All of D-Mac's ability can evaporate in a heartbeat. Ask the last Eagles "Ultimate Weapon" Randall Cunningham.

So in reality what you're saying is that noone should get a long term contract because they could get injured?

long term contracts are not guarenteed in the nfl. that is why agents try to get as much as possible in the signing bonus. the bigger the bonus, the bigger the risk to the team that injury or early retirement while fuck them hard...

personally i think anything past the third year is a major risk, especially a running back or a running quarterback.

I would rather sign a player to a long term contract then to have to let him go to free agency and watch him win a super bowl somewhere else. Not only that but they assure themselves that even if the salary cap jumps by 20million in 10 years that they don't have to re-negociate an extension if the eagles don't want to.

What I am saying is that the average career of an NFL player is 4 years.

Signing a guy for 10+ years is irresponsible on the owner's part.

then you obviously dont understand how the salary cap really works...

right. When the Eagles win big with DM, please remind me of this and I will STFU. This is irresponsible on their part.

Here's my opinion about McNabb for those who give a shit: If there is one player in the league who is most valuable to his team it is him. I can think of no other player who shoulders the bulk of the offensive load ALONE, as does D Mac. I do NOT think that he is the best QB in the league though, so weather or not he deserves to be paid that way is a toss up. That honor goes to Brett Favre as far as I am concerned. If the Eagles were going to invest in anyone though, they couldn't have spend any wiser.

you dont get it man... No long term contracts are ever run out to duration.. its a tool to avoid the salary cap.. That being said, I bet donovan plays at least half of the 12 before he winds up a back up some where else.

THIS IS OBSURD. NO PLAYER IS WORTH THAT. I SAY SET A MAXIMUM SALARY FOR THE AMOUNT OF YEARS YOU PLAY. NO PLAYER MAKES MORE THAN 3 TO 4 MILLION/YEAR. THEY CANT DO ANYTHING ELSE TO MAKE THAT MONEY CUZ THE MAJORITY ARE GHETTO RICH ANYWAY AND CANT EVEN SPELL "INVESTMENT" OR "RETIREMENT".

JIM BROWN SAID IT BEST IN AN INTERVIEW: "I DIDNT PLAY FOR THE MONEY, I DIDNT PLAY FOR ANYTING BUT THE LOVE OF THE GAME."

ITS FUCKING OUTRAGEOUS WHAT SOME PLAYERS ARE MAKING. THEY ARE NOT WORTH IT AT ALL. IF THAT WERE THAT CASE, WE SHOULD START PAYING COLLEGE PLAYERS. THEY BRING IN ALL KINDS OF MONEY AND COACHES MAKE MILLIONS WHILE THEY ARENT EVEN ALLOWED TO WORK OVER 14 HOURS A WEEK TO EARN MONEY WHILE IN THE NCAA.

KAYNE

lets not bash mcnabb's character.. hell, the guy has never said a word about how much money he makes or what he wants... this was a team thing... and the eagles were not going to fuck up this one... they have their new stadium set for next season and they want to fill it for years to come... donovan will do just that..

i have a black mcnabb jersey, i got my white one for dawkins... and my green one is personalized...

i've retired my old ones as well, but i admit i still wear my randall jersey to piss off some buddies.

I like the deal, i like mcnabb, he is as good a overall player as there is in the nfl. But he is not the most conditioned athlete in football, there will be no more dynastys in the league anymore 2 titles maybe, and lets see the eagles in the superbowl first before we start talking dynasty. Oh yeah madbomber, you weren't one of those guys who booed when they picked mcnabb over ricky williams were you? be honest.

I like mcnabb. more power to him for making as much cash as he can.

by the way madbomer.. I hope you dont live in downtown detroit... this place.... I don't even want to say.
