Yes, that’s right…bird-watching! Not just any bird though, only the vulture.
The vulture is a truly fascinating creature. It has a number of unique characteristics that make it well worth the time to study this being in greater detail.
First of all, vultures aren’t easily recognized as such. When they float way up or begin a slow but determined dive towards you, the majority of people mistake them for such nobler birds as hawks or eagles; it needs an experienced eye to distinguish a vulture at first glance. Vultures may appear to be very graceful and even attractive at first (that is till you get to know them better) so if you’ve encountered a vulture but failed to recognize it as one then don’t judge yourself too harshly, even experienced watchers make mistakes when it comes to vultures.
Vultures are both birds of prey and carrion eaters (ie they feed on dead carcasses) which means they hunt their prey down but the hunted rarely notices until it’s too late. Unlike the honest and blunt attack of an eagle or hawk, the vulture employs a more cunning and subtle strategy. They never engage in open battle, but much prefer several precise measured stabs to the back of it’s unsuspecting victim. Unlike the noble eagle the vulture likes to hunt in packs, waiting to ambush the weak, gathering in huge numbers at feeding time.
If you’ve ever traveled in vulture country there are several stages of realization that you go through. First you don’t even notice the vultures, oblivious to the fact that you’re being closely watched. Then you slowly become aware of their presence seemingly far off. You may admire their grace, the quiet way they follow you, they share your experience. As your journey progresses and you tire and slow down, the vultures circle lower and lower. You realise the vulture is no accidental companion, he’s here for a specific reason. The scorching heat, the dust, the sand and the lack of water all sap your resolve but none more than the vulture, he wants nothing more in the world than for you to fail and die.
The best thing about vulture watching is that you never have to seek them out, you let them find you. You'll be surprised just how common the vulture is!
Here’s what you do: you get a stunning girlfriend and watch the vultures gather, spiral and dive. Be warned however, their sole wish is your untimely demise and their number is legion.
