I just read somewhere that Bush has reclassified McDonald's jobs as
"manufacturing". they assemble burgers. Now he can proudly announce growth in America's manufacturing base.

i hope this is a joke... i dunno about your nck of the woods but the mexicans have all those jobs around here too so nothing has really changed.

I hope it's a joke too, but I'm afraid it may not be. I'm still looking for confirmation.

Those burgers are put together with a close 1/16 of an inch tolerance.

who the fuck do they think they are going to fool with this... jesus christ.... maybe i will move to canada

Instead of whining about the loss of manufacturing jobs, folks should learn to do something else. Should we keep making horses and buggies just to keep the buggy makers employed?

The strength of America is our KNOWLEDGE, and our advanced EDUCATION SYSTEM. Hence why the majority of advanced technology was invented by AMERICANS over the past 100 years.

But are we taking advantage of our KNOWLEDGE over less developed nations? Noooooo...

If you took 100 of our smartest CEO's, professors and scientists and gave them 2 years to come up with ways to bring money BACK into our country, and stop the money leaving our country -- the rest of the world would be at their knees. We'd have 3rd world countries out-bidding each other for cheaper labour and nations being forced to remove ALL import tariffs if they want to bring their products into our land.

It's LACK OF utilization of our intelligence that's our problem. What's the damn use of our 12 years of highly paid education and college, if no one fucking uses it -- and u just wind up getting replaced by $2/hr habib and hung low?

If u don't believe me. Look up at Canada. Most Canadians are at the least high school graduates, and on top of that, Canada has a MUCH higher % of jobs that require college experience. Meaning they are better at utilizing their educated workforce. Even with 40% taxes, and 15% sales tax -- they still somehow keep up an american style standard of living. If we had that here -- we'd all be homeless.

One of the smartest Canadian trade policies they have -- is forcing nations to keep Canadian imports at a certain % if they want to keep their exports duty-free to Canada. This keeps so many Canadian industries employed and keeps a lot of money *within* Canada.

It's called "trade-off" import/exporting. Something America could learn from.

...was being located next to the richest nation in the world and having them as your number one buyer of goods. Also living under the US defense umbrella therefore having no defense budget to speak of. They can have a decent economy in spite of ridiculously high taxes and high unemployment.

Exactly. That means they're smart and know how to take advantage of their environment. China, Mexico and Japan have all found the same advantages to -- to pump TRILLIONS into their economies, at the US's expense. The US is basically seen as one big fat ass wallet for the world.

Bush is afraid to tell the Americans that the rest of the world is making off of us, but we're not making money off of them.

how do you explain how walmart then? are you familiar with their business model?

Congressman Dingell is a Liberal Democrat (a.k.a. Bush-hater), and the NYTimes article says the administration was "questioning" whether the McJobs should be reclassified. Calm the fuck down.

This is no worse than when Regan had military personel reclassified as service sector employment so he could show job growth that was "non miltary". HA!

maybe it's working for walmart. however, as a whole, we are importing double what we export in dollar value.

On the absolute contrary. He promotes this through free trade (NAFTA, GATT,and western hemisphere initiatives). It is in our interest to have other countries get rich along with us because it promotes capitalism, democracy and trade and reduces illegal immigration.

When Razor Guns talks economics, click "ignore". I learned that a while ago and it works great.

This is bad - when something isn;t working for you, change what the words mean.

I know, I just wanted to hear his explanation. although I thought was also because the steel industy is based in some "swing states" and bush was trying to win some votes. however as a result of the tariffs steel prices increased (logically) and goods containing steel became more expensive. so of course the average consumer gets screwed. nothing unusual there.

Actually this is not about the lose of jobs so much as it is about misrepresenting the truth. Or lying as its commonly known.

Actually, in the world accorinding to Matt --- everyone has a job, there is no unemployment -- and right now we're actualy in an economic boom. How niave of us!
