Managing Herpes

I know someone who was infected with herpes over 10 years ago. He used to have occasional pain that would go away. Now he's having extreme pain all the time. He already takes Valtrex. Is there another option for treatment of the pain? I wasn't aware that herpes could cause so much pain. He's almost suicidal from this. Does anyone know what his options are?

Advil, tylenol, any pain reliever, warm sitz baths, and wearing loose fitting under clothes. There currently is not many options out there to limit pain. However if he is in severe pain from it he should go to his regular physician and possibly get put on something other than valtrex. There are a few medications out there to help regulate. Valaciclovir helps to resolve the issue faster and also limits pain, tell him to ask about that or for limited outbreaks that don't happen often tell him to try Aciclovir. I am sure once he explains himself to his physician the dr will know which is best out of the many antivirals.
