Man tries to bribe way out of arrest with cuts of meat

BOYCE - A Lafayette man tried to bribe his way out of jail by offering the arresting officer cuts of meat, police said.

Boyce police were called to Londerry Street on Monday evening in reference to a disturbance. The complainant told police he was being harassed and cussed at by James Frank Palmer of 330 B. Jeanette St., Lafayette and Jerod Michael Cazes of 301 Birch St., Apt. 206, Lafayette.

Assistant Police Chief Linwood Banks said the complainant was upset because the men were attempting to sell him frozen meat. He asked that Palmer, 42, and Cazes, 20, be removed from the area.

It appears the men drove from Lafayette to attempt to sell their meat door to door, Banks said.

He said the complainant's street was one of the first streets where Palmer and Cazes were going door to door.

While being arrested, Banks said, Palmer offered the officer his choice of meat if he let them go.

Palmer found himself slapped with another charge by the officer.

Both men were arrested on charges of disturbing the peace and soliciting and peddling.

Palmer also faces a public bribery charge.

Both were released from the Rapides Parish Jail.
