make money slow!

A number of people have been enquiring on the board of late how they can earn lots of money in their career.

here's how:

1. Do one of the following:
a) go to well-regarded med school
b) go to a kick-ass law school
c) go study comp sci at JHU/Cornell/Berkeley/UPenn

2. If you chose a), get a job working 900 hours a week, no time for sex, bodybuilding, or even sleep, wait 10 years, and then you will be earning 300k+ a year in private practice.

If you chose b) follow the same route.

If you chose c), move to California, or get a job with McKinsey or Price Waterhouse, and follow the same route.

Don't get a phd coz you'll end up like me with a university job that pays shit!

What was your doctorate dissertation on? What was your Masters thesis re:?
What field did you discipline in?

You don't need any degree to be wealthy. Some of the most wealthy people I know are people in sales positions in which you don't need a degree to do. Talking up to 500k a yr. College is for the people who need to be herded (can't figure it out for themselves). Lifter

I like that photo! Except my html coding skills have slipped a bit recently, too much c++...

I am a comp sci major with phd in comp sci. Plenty of c++ hacking experience. I am currently looking around for a c++ programming job because I've discovered writing papers doesn't compensate for the salary of being a post-doc. I am a bit bitter because all my classmates from uni who went into industry are earning big bucks by now. Still, I enjoyed the phd and the thesis is now 5 pages from being finished. I didn't do a masters, it's not required here, you can go straight into phd. But then the phd bit takes 4 years plus usually. Coz you don't get 2 years to get started while taking classes. I am confident I will get a new job within the month. There are some interesting ones going at the moment, and the recruitment slump has not hit the UK as hard as the US, I have good relevant experience, and I'm quite good at selling myself.

No I'm not originally Scottish! The Scots do have that awful reputation for penny pinching, but it doesn't really seem to be true, from what I've seen....

No, I'm Robert the Bruce's great-grandaughter. (just kidding). You see plenty of folks wearing kilts up here, just as normal everyday wear, although they tend to be older. Mind you, those legs could do with a shave.... and a tan.... so could mine though...

:FRlol:

That's funny. I believe it is quite possible that a greater percentage of American men shave their legs and pits than European women. I can send you some Mach 3's if you need them. :D

Huh, no doctorate dissertation and you have a doctorate? How does that work, sounds like people in Sctoland can get a PhD simply for spelling it right. [No offense to you]

In the US [and Britain], you write an exhaustive paper re: your field of discipline (like oh say Nonpolynomial Equations as Encryption) and then must prove and defend your paper in front of a review board. *THEN* you get your doctorate.

too much c++?

I can't speak for other areas of the world, but here in Boston the only real jobs open now want C++ - so there is no such thing as too much :)
also they want a PhD or MS in either bio, chem, ee, or cs - but ideally a combination of those. those are always fun for me to look at and then lean back and say, yup, ain't got that.

LOL.
Bay Area and Arizona, cannot get enough C++. Same can be said for Salt Lake Valley.

Every modern [cobol and visual basic are not modern] is written in c or c++.

And no, java is *still* a scripting language not a true programming language. [Sorry skrypt kiddies]

I was hoping to do a degree in Computer Science, but it doesn't look like i will be this year now since i probably just fucked up my exams (COmputing was good, but was clueless in Maths and Physics) :(

I wanna keep busy in the holidays, maybe learn a new language or get a simple computing job so i dont feel too stupid. Anyone got ideas?
