Mac Quads?

Mac Geektwins unite, form a buck of water..!

What do you suggest for a souped up Mac that'll handle rendering, animation, graphics, processor-intensive stuff. Not for me btw.

I'm thinking mac quad with 8 gigs. Right? Where's the best place to buy them - best buy? I guess since there's only a few models - there isn't much choice on what kind of specs or model to get.

For that price you could build a Core i7 intel/windows based build and it would be significantly faster - just it'd have windows.

What software will you be using?

Fuck, I'd imagine you could even use solid state drives or SAS 15,000 RPM drives and it'd still be cheaper and faster.

Ok this is what you're looking at buddy:
1. For the Mac pro you spec'd out you're looking at around 3800 bucks - no monitor
2. Or you could spend 3300 bucks, smoke the shit out of that Mac, have a 1gb firestream graphics card, 12gb of memory, core i7 quadcore, 2 - 300gb 10,000RPM drives, 2 - 1tb harddrives and a 28" LCD monitor.

How difficult is it to build a custom computer that runs OSX? Like the one UA_iron, mentioned, could you install OSX on that computer? Would it run both. I've heard of dual booting before but don't know the specifics other then that apple computers make running visa/xp easy. I'm not sure about doing it the other way around though.

Check out this link to Apple I think it's what you are looking for Razorgunz.

Apple sets their price across retailers, so one outlet doesn't out-discount the other. But you can get decent educational and business discounts, just make sure and ask for them on the front end.

I personally use a Mac Pro 3.2 GHz quad-core dual processor system. I ordered it with 4 GB ram and ordered 16GB more from Crutual Memory. I also have two 15,000 RPM drives striped into a Raid 0 array. Then to make sure I was absolutely over the top, I put two 30-inch mac displays on it. I forget which video card I ordered, but I can look it up (on my laptop atm).

It's sick-o-fast running netbeans, photoshop or iMovie. Plus I ordered it about two weeks before Christmas and have spent *zero* maintenance time on it. I did have to run the raid configuration utility to convert the drives over into a striped format (they ship as simply two big drives).

I don't remember exactly, because I bought a couple other things while I was there. I do remember getting nearly a 8% educational discount because I was teaching at the time.

What's the difference between the two???

Photoshop, 3d rendering, editing, sound editing, animation, effects, lotsa processor intensive type stuff but doesn't have to be totally over the top. Just "reasonably fast and reliable".

Memory is probably more important than processor speed in a lot of these apps. 8 gigs has to be the min.

Yeah but it wouldn't have the sweet Mac case.

But it needs to have some really awesome black lights and alien-shaped front panel like all those cool of gamer kids have.
