Not checked this site in a while. Looks like there's a lot of new stuff.
http://www.free-codecs.com/index.htm

Obviously, I can't guarantee that everything is necessarily virus free but this is a reasonably well-reputed site. One or two are adware but they should clearly say so in the description.

in laymans terms, what exactly is a codec?

i've downloaded new movies on limewire but when i try to view them there's no sound and i get an errror message saying that wmp was unable to find such and such codec?

It's short for compression/decompression or for coder/decoder or variants thereon. All your movies get compressed to turn them into mpg, avi, wmv, etc. To view them they need to be decompressed back out into an image and for this you need the codec. Similarly for audio. The codec is just a piece of software (or hardware) to do the job.

If you do a Google for "define: codec" or "what is a codec" (without the quotes) you'll get more info than you can shake a stick at.

you're MUCH better off ripping the .dll's out of a mainstream player and using the Windows Media Player shell than useing freeware codecs.

Most people who buy DVD players get some sort of mainstream player which includes a codec.

download a program called "g-spot" run that and then run the program you are tryin to view..it will tell you the codec you need to view that specific file

Great question bro,

I loaded your thread with a little of my own Karma to help you get a better answer faster! You can release it later to the member who's answer you liked best.

This feature called "Karma Awarded Threads" alows you to give members an incentive to help you out!

Platinum Members, when you create a new thread, select the "Additional Option" Award Karma to This Post. You can then upload Karma to your question and when you get an answer that you like, you can award it to the person who provided you with that answer.

Let's say that there's an older thread that you created that you did not get many responses on. Open that thread, and click the link "Thread Tools" and you can retroactively create a Karma Awarded Thread. Click the Thread Tools menu and select the option under the "Platinum Copy" feature.

Enjoy! And good luck to the winner!

I think I've used VLC also to capture video and audio streams to a file for later playback. It's a versatile package.
