Lorazebam (1mg) vs Ambien (10mg)

My doctor recently prescribed me Lorazebam (1mg) after having gained a tolerance to Ambien (10mg). If you remember my past ambien thread you will know that i tripped balls my first time taking it (during a research paper too). Anyway, i'm not in the mood for any more "pleasant surprises", so can anyone contrast Lorazebam with Ambien? Also, is Lorazepam similar to xanax? Thanks in advance to those who reply.

ativan (lorazepam) is similar to Xanax, being that it is an anti-psychotic med. I don't think because of your adverse reaction with ambien that you would have similar problems with lorazepam, but everyone is wired up differently and has different reactions.

1mg is a low dose, but if you are worried, break that baby in 1/2 and take .5mg.

lorazepam and alprazolam (xanax) are closely related to each other. the "zepam" at the end of their names indicate they are from a class of drugs called benzodiazepines (like valium etc). the can be addictive, but used in moderation, can help with sleep.
it's interesting that he gave you lorazepam instead of alprazolam or diazepam. lorazepam has antidepressant properties and is usually given to people getting over a tough time in their lives.

Lorazepam is not an antipsychotic, it is an anxiolytic/sedative.
Loarzepam is quite addictive as well and you will build a tolerance to it as well. 1mg is a decent dose, but it should only be used to correct short term sleep problems, ie, reset your sleep cycle.

I had to take 20mg of ambien to sleep and then it only lasted for 4 hours - hated that stuff. On Trazodone now, works great, is non-addictive and no long term sides. Maybe ask your doc about that one. Good luck, insomnia sucks the big one!!!

I was perscribed ativan for anxiety while in college. I was on it for over a year at 1mg/day to get me through the day. Its a fast acting muscle relaxant/antianxiety/sedative of ythe bezodiazapine family. The trouble with it is that it is most effective for quelling axiety moments and has a short 1/2 life of
around 4 hrs. Abetter choice is Klonopin (clorazapam) wich has a duration from 18+ hours so theres no sudden drop off. Great for sleep and a general calm feeling the rerst of the next day.
