I thinking of moving over to London within a year, for those of you that live there how is it? Or around London. I have never been but will be planning a trip over there sometime in the new year.

it is good, very similar to a large american city, if you want to taste the real England then move to Manchester or Leeds, both are still big cities, but not overun by imigrants and foreigners.

are you saying London is?

well perhaps that is a bit of an overexagerration, but it is a very toutristy city and id full of non brits (I don't know if that bothers you), I'm not trying to put you off, it is a great city. What are you moving over for?

It is extremely expensive. You'll likely not be able to afford a home to yourself to rent or buy within 40 miles of London. It can take 2 professional salaries to buy a flat with a combined kitchen/lounge 30 miles from London!!! Rent is expensive.. figure on £2000 at least in central london for a 1 bed flat, and £600 for the same flat 30 miles away in either direction i.e. Croydon, Slough, Uxbridge, etc.

It is grey, smelly, and really quite dull. It does have loads of restaurants that cost the earth, and a pint of beer will cost you nearly £4.. a monthly london tube/bus travelcard might cost you £100-£200.. be prepared for lots of aggro on the tube and greatly increased blood pressure.... be prepared to get nowhere fast... be prepared to be bled dry.

You might have to settle on Greater London.

Did I mention it was grey and the lizard queen lives there?

Perhaps I should work for the London Tourist Board.

I lived centrally (rented a shared house with mates) while I worked up there in 1999/200 and you can have a fantastic lifestyle if you have the money, now I’m about a 45 minute drive south. I would be back in the city centre if my job was there again because I had the best time of my life while there.

Like any major city it’s difficult to generalise, you have shitty areas, expensive exclusive areas, tourist areas, cultural areas, shopping areas, business areas, each have their own qualities and cultures. Are you talking about being right in the city centre, just out of town or out in the suburbs?

Hey Tuc, I'm coming up to Manchester at the weekend! (well Wigan, but close)! Ill look out for a big ugly bloke and say hi...

What Tuc said, except without the bit about Manchester. Or Leeds for that matter.

London's great if you're making too much money and like the night life. Otherwise look elsewhere.

traffic is horrendous. it takes 45 mins to an hour to get anywhere. In order to cut down on in town traffic, all automobiles must pay a fee to enter and drive through the down town streets. Also, the average speed on the roads is like 2.8 mph. That was the big joke.......... it is now slower to travel in an automobile across town that it was to travel by horse 100 years ago.

it is also the most ..uh hum... 'diverse' european city. you may want to take that into consideration.

But on the other side of the coin. As an american, I do not think you should let any negative comment stop you from comming. No matter how bad it is, it will be an experience you will never forget nor regret.

took me 2 hours to drive the 35 miles from Vauxhall, South London to Slough the other day.....

..and usually it costs most london commuters between £150-200 ($270-350) to travel to work by train per month (despite it being overcrowded)...

I was born and still live in London. It is the Capitol and yes it is the City that never sleeps.

The speed of life is hectic, traffic is terrible, house prices are out of control but it is a lot warmer than up North.

London is London and if you like the hectic lifestyle and the bright lights it is the only place to be.

Have to say i happily pay the additional cost of housing rather than have to wear flares and talk funny as they do UP North!!

Wrongun!

I was in London for a while. I loved it.
I stayed in St. Johns Wood. Nice little flat near the tube. No problems....

I miss my little pub on the high street.

i work for a company that is basically everywhere in the world, so hopefully moving would not be to hard. I am getting married in May, so I was thinking in a year or so it would be an experience for us to live somewhere else for a few years (5 at the most).

I don't know if I would live in the city or not, probably right outside the city if it was more affordable and nicer/quiter.
