I think OMGWTFBBQ can answer this.

Fedora, Suse or Mandrake are the best free options for newbies. There's always Lindows for maximum hand-holding.

Fedora is a good end-user version of red hat.
Sort of like a red hat-lite.

Fedora installs wicked easy.

don't do it man, more trouble then its worth unless you are an uber 1337 h4x0r

I would like to learn linux in order to provide service and support for my clients. Also I despise windows.

been using mandrake for maybe 8 months. i'm not a programmer, i just hate windows THAT much. i upgraded to mandrake 9.2 over xmas. things are a little bit smoother with it than with 9.1, but that was smooth as well. the computer has been "up" for 54 days now. yes, that's 54 days w/out having to reboot. if i don't have to shut it off, i won't.

only major problems i've had are with browsing some web pages. i've got all the right plug-ins installed, but some things i just can't view. ticks me off, and i'll figure it out some day.

you don't have to go to the command line for everything either. that's what's made it easy for non-programmers to use linux.

Quoted from the Mandrake Control Center Welcome Page
The tools accessed through the Mandrake Control Center greatly simplify the use of the system, notably by avoiding the use of the evil command line.

i gotta laugh every time i see that :D

Knoppix is cool if you don't have a spare machine -- you just boot off the CD, and it doesn't install ANYTHING to your hard drive.

Noodle around with it as much as you like, then kick out the CD and reboot right back to your old system.

Good way to find out whether the machine will accept Linux before you go for a permanent install.

Mandrake has a bootable cd now called mandrake move.

Linux > Windows. I'd use Red-Hat or if your technically inclined ZIPSLACK (Slackware) can be run from UMSDOS w/o repartioning.

Oh yeah if your using Windows make sure your modem is going to work, wonderfull Compaq and their win-modems screwed me over.

You can boot off damn near any ISO without installing to the HD.
Problem is, if you want to use it as a desktop none of your settings are saved after re-boot.

I would go with Fedora, it's stable as hell, easy to use and BY FAR has the broadest array of drivers.

Gentoo is near impossible to get installed but once you do it's pretty easy to keep updated.

I could not get MandrakeMove to work. My computer just sits there and says something about loading linux kernal and the keyboard lights flash on and off. I did get knoppix to work. I am actually posting this while in knoppix. Knoppix is fast as hell. Now that i have linux up and running, I need find some applications that run on it.
