If so, have you put much into it (putting your work history on there, getting recommendations, etc.), and has it helped you? If it has helped you, how has it helped?

I have, but I haven't used it to get a new job or anything (been here 10 years) so I can't say its helped me at all. I have had friends that have gotten job connections through it though.

i've been on it for a couple of years, but i've yet to do anything meaningful with it. occasionally, someone wants to connect with me, i get an email, and i add them, and then forget about it.

Same here.

IMO it is much more professional than Facebook (and of course MySpace) but as for getting leads or anything it has been useless.

i've also never tried to do anything with it. if i were to try, i suppose i'd look for either specific, listed job opportunities or people doing interesting things in a relevant field...preferably in my extended network.

right now, for example, i'm kicking around the idea of some temp/contract work in IT for a few months. i just got to the LA area and have no job. although i don't need to work, it would be nice to have some cash coming in. i want that fucking white 335i coupe...coral red leather, aluminum trim, tints...shit is WEST COAST.

i'm just as likely to use EF as a networking tool, though (hint hint).

Bro of mine told me a funny story... one time he applied for a minor gig, like a Craigslist thing, and the screener was doing this whole major back-and-forth. (The way he tells it, it's like three days of emails asking "If you were a tree, what kind of tree...")

My bro finally asked the guy "have you heard of Linked In?" and gave him his profile. Much to his surprise, that nailed it. Turned out the screener was some kind of Linked In maniac, and marked all the "gotta have" items complete based on my bro's LI profile.

Doesn't sound like something I'd count on, but I guess every once in a while things just click.

exactly. it can't hurt, and it can get you access to people you otherwise wouldn't come in contact with.

I'm on there. A guy I used to work with is on there and he is ALL OVER that thing! He was a trainer in our company and he's started his own business doing sales training. He has like a hundred recommendations (I can see that being useful), he has a blog there. He's probably more into that than anyone ever.

I guess it's working for him. Hope it is, he is a cool guy.
