How does this work for most companies? Can you request one for personal reasons - For example if want to travel somewhere or do something- any info or past experiences is greatly appreciated

It all depends on the policy of your company and your reasons. I did take 2 months hiatus from work , but I had a compelling reason.
 
1) use vacatino days
2) use unpaid if you need extra days for your vacation
3) if exhausted vacation days - ask for 1 or 2 unpaid now and then
4) for a long leave of absence - has to be a compelling reason. since the business side may be affected by your absense.

order of skipping work.
 
I took a leave of absence of 30 days while working for the last company i worked for, it was to go to rehab though, but I didn't tell them that, the only people who knew was my insurance company, and they have to keep that sh-t confidential,

Depends on the rules of the company.....also depends on the reason - pregnancy would be covered under FMLA for example.....

Usually you have to use up all accumulated sick & vacation time, then maybe short term disability then long term....then unpaid....
